The Role

We’re looking for a skilled Game Designer who lives and breathes roguelites - someone who’s spent countless hours theorycrafting builds, dissecting synergies, and understanding what makes each run feel fresh, fair, and fun. If you can't articulate why Hades nailed its meta-progression or what makes Risk of Rain 2's item stacking so satisfying, this probably isn't the role for you.

You'll take the lead on designing and balancing characters, weapons, augments, enemies, bosses, biomes, progression, economy, synergies, and pacing for NIMRODS (https://store.steampowered.com/app/2086430/NIMRODS/). You'll shape both the moment-to-moment action and the long-term replayability, collaborating with a small team where ideas turn into prototypes fast.

This is a high-ownership role in a fully remote, self-managed environment. We're looking for senior-level designers who can own entire systems from concept to ship without hand-holding.

You’ll often be

  • Conceptualizing, implementing, and balancing game systems, content, and features
  • Using data, math, and intuition to fine-tune progression, difficulty, and economy balance
  • Designing UI/UX to deliver satisfying & intuitive player experiences
  • Writing clear documentation and design specs

Critical requirements

  • Extensive hands-on experience playing roguelites, survivor-likes, and bullet hells - with strong opinions on what makes them work
  • Shipped experience designing for roguelite/survivor-like games (commercial, mod, or deep personal projects)
  • Deep understanding of balance and systems design - XP curves, weapon scaling, synergy design, meta-progression
  • Strong mathematical foundation and data analysis skills to validate design decisions
  • Unity experience and source control proficiency (git)
  • Self-motivated and resourceful - you figure things out, move fast, and don't wait for direction

  • A strong collaborator and communicator in a remote environment
  • Comfortable switching between creative ideation and analytical problem-solving
  • Wildly creative - you bring fresh ideas and aren't afraid to pitch the weird stuff
  • Passionate about player experience, with empathy for both power gamers and casual fans
