Job Description-

The Utah Division of Wildlife is seeking a dynamic and motivated Habitat Biologist to join our team at the Great Basin Research Center in Ephraim, Utah. The successful candidate will be responsible for researching and developing cultural practices, propagation protocols, and seed cleaning processes for native plant species (primarily forbs and grasses). This role involves working with conventional farming equipment on a small research farm, testing various herbicide and irrigation treatments, and producing plant materials that can be used to restore and enhance wildlife habitat in Utah and throughout the west.

Key Responsibilities


Key responsibilities and day to day responsibilities of this position:

  • Oversee and maintain research plots including planting, cultivating, weeding, watering, and harvesting
  • Implement, monitor, and evaluate the success of various irrigation and herbicide treatments on native forbs
  • Maintain accurate and detailed records of research activities
  • Collaborate with other team members and external partners to develop research priorities and publish findings
  • Hire and supervise a seasonal crew to assist with research plot maintenance and plant material processing

Qualifications


Minimum or "day-one" qualifications:

  • Experience with basic experimental design
  • Excellent communication, collaboration, and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to train and supervise seasonal employees
  • Ability to collect, record, organize, and compile data
  • Creative problem-solving skills
  • Ability to use Microsoft Office software and Google applications
  • Ability to operate various equipment including 4x4 trucks, equipment trailers, ATVs, etc.
  • The ability to work under extreme conditions and/or inclement weather

Preferred or trainable/on-the-job qualifications:

  • Ability to operate conventional farm equipment including tractors, combines, and tillage implements
  • Knowledge of plant material development processes
  • Statistical analysis and statistical software skills
  • Understanding of plant ecology and agricultural practices
  • Familiarity with conventional farming equipment (tractor, combine, seed drill, tillage implements, etc.)
  • Experience with irrigation systems, pesticide/herbicide application, and pest management
  • Familiarity with basic statistical analysis methods and statistical software

Working, Conditions, and Physical Requirements -

  • Requires the ability to stand, walk over rough surfaces, bend, crouch, stretch, lift moderately heavy items (up to 50 lbs) in a recurring manner and/or long periods of time.
  • Outdoor working conditions (research farm) may include high temperatures with limited shade, strong winds, and extreme weather conditions.
  • Indoor working conditions (greenhouse, lab, office) may include long periods of standing, sitting, and performing repetitive tasks.

Certifications/Licenses -

  • Drivers License
  • Pesticide applicators license within 3 months

Other Requirements -

Travel throughout the state and occasional overnight trips required. Occasional overtime or variable schedule work required.
