General Assignment Reporter

Job Summary
The general assignment position will write news stories on a diverse variety of subjects, ranging from news and features to sports.

The Republic-Monitor is an award-winning, weekly community newspaper publishing news and information digitally, socially and in a weekly print publication serving a county of nearly 30,000.

The successful candidate will be supported through mentoring, flexible hours and a mix of pitching stories and workshopping ideas with leadership and their peers.

The Republic-Monitor staff works in an office located in the heart of downtown Perryville, Mo., with ample access to everything the county has to offer, including outdoor adventures, a burgeoning entertainment district, cozy coffee shops and constant activities from which to fill a weekend to-do list.

Responsibilities

• Research, investigate, and report on a wide range of news stories, including breaking news, features, and human interest pieces.
• Write clear, compelling articles adhering to AP style guidelines while maintaining accuracy and objectivity.
• Conduct interviews with sources, gather facts, and verify information through diligent fact-checking.
• Capture high-quality photographs and create engaging videos to complement written content.
• Edit and proofread stories for clarity, grammar, and style before publication.
• Manage social media channels by sharing stories, engaging with the audience, and monitoring trending topics.
• Collaborate with editors and multimedia team members to produce multimedia content such as videos and photo galleries that enhance storytelling.

Skills

• Strong writing skills with the ability to craft compelling narratives under tight deadlines.
• Proficiency in AP style for journalistic writing and editing.
• Experience in photography and videography to produce visual content that complements stories.
• Knowledge of video production techniques including shooting, editing, and post-production workflows.
• Excellent communication skills for interviews, source development, and team collaboration.
• Skilled in research methods to uncover facts quickly and accurately.
• Familiarity with social media management tools for content distribution and audience engagement.
