The Small Business and Technology Development Center (SBTDC) at Winston-Salem State University (WSSU) is seeking a General Business Counselor. The General Business Counselor (GBC) will be responsible for assisting pre-venture, and small/medium-sized businesses with a variety of issues including, but not limited to financial analysis, market analysis, personnel recruitment/management, growth planning, etc. The GBC will interact in a guidance capacity, acting more like a coach than a consultant, building relationships with clients and acting as a trusted advisor. This role will work with a broad spectrum of for-profit businesses, not specific to market sector or business model. The SBTDC assists clients through one-on-one counseling and co-counseling, connecting them with the internal resources of the SBTDC and collaborating with partners offering resources in the local and regional entrepreneurial ecosystems. This position involves 25% travel, mostly local with mileage reimbursement.
Responsibilities of the General Business Counselor include:
- Administer and manage a portfolio of clients, providing confidential, in-depth business counseling, training, research and technical assistance services to small to medium sized enterprises and new business start ups
- Advise prospective and existing business owners on a variety of topics such as management, marketing, and finances
- Assist clients in the development of business plans and financial analysis, provide analysis of business operations and financial statements with recommendations for improvements
- Identify and assess client business issues, anticipate potential problems, project outcomes and impacts, and research and present options or solutions for clients’ needs
- Review written plans provided by clients to advise them on improvements
- Develop and conduct training programs for clients, including preparation of objectives and provision of instructions
- Coach clients to help them find solutions to their business challenges, including strategic planning, systems and process development, research, inventory and human resource management and market expansion
- Develop, maintain, and enhance professional relationships with clients and partners of the SBTDC at WSSU
- Promote and market the SBTDC at WSSU in a six-county region and inform potential clients of the benefits of SBTDC services
- Maintain client records in the database and prepare reports as requested
- Participate in student outreach through a variety of activities, including mentoring interns or working with professors and students on class projects
