General Counsel – Energy – California (Hybrid or Remote)

A rapidly growing, venture-backed energy company in California is seeking an experienced General Counsel to join its executive leadership team. This is a unique opportunity to shape the legal and regulatory strategy of an ambitious company driving innovation in the evolving energy sector.

As a trusted legal advisor, you will lead corporate governance, regulatory compliance, and strategic legal initiatives while supporting a high-growth organization preparing for the next phase of its development.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead all legal, corporate governance, and compliance matters across the enterprise
• Manage legal risk and provide strategic counsel to senior leadership and the Board
• Oversee preparation for public company operations, including IPO readiness and SEC compliance
• Navigate complex federal and state regulatory frameworks relevant to energy and infrastructure
• Support commercial contracts, government partnerships, and licensing matters

Qualifications

Must-Have

• Experience working at a Publicly Traded Company, ideally as a General Counsel
• General Counsel experience with full enterprise legal accountability
• Demonstrated public company experience, including IPO process, SEC compliance, or board governance
• Deep experience in energy or utilities sectors with significant federal regulatory expertise
• Proven ability to navigate complex federal regulatory environments (experience with federal energy agencies preferred)

Preferred

• Experience with licensing or regulatory approvals in advanced energy technologies
• Leadership experience in energy or utility companies, including independent power producers
• Direct involvement in IPO preparation and SEC filings (S-1 process)
• Built and scaled legal teams in fast-growing companies
• Admission to the CA and/or DC Bar
