Position Overview:
The General Counsel at Keystone Custom Homes will serve as the company’s chief legal officer and primary legal advisor, providing strategic and practical legal guidance across all aspects of a residential homebuilding and land development business. This role partners closely with executive leadership to proactively identify and manage legal risk, minimize exposure, control legal spend, and support profitable growth. As a trusted advisor, the General Counsel will oversee contract negotiation, land acquisition and development matters, commercial and financial transactions, construction and warranty issues, litigation management, regulatory compliance, risk mitigation, and corporate governance while providing strategic day-to-day legal guidance to support operations, sales, customer relations, and overall business objectives. Key Responsibilities:
  • Provide strategic legal counsel to executive leadership on land acquisition and development, residential development, home sales, customer relations, joint ventures, and strategic initiatives.
  • Negotiate, draft, and review real estate purchase agreements, land development contracts, construction agreements, vendor and trade partner contracts, and sales-related documents.
  • Identify legal risks related to home construction, warranties, customer disputes, and regulatory compliance, and recommend practical, cost-effective solutions.
  • Serve as a legal liaison to represent Keystone Custom Homes with homebuyers, trade partners, municipalities, lenders, title companies, and suppliers.
  • Advise on day-to-day legal matters affecting operations, including marketing programs, sales practices, disclosures, and dispute resolution.
  • Manage and resolve customer and third-party disputes, including warranty claims, construction defect allegations, and Better Business Bureau or consumer complaints, with a focus on early and amicable resolution when possible.
  • Provide legal guidance on zoning, land use, environmental regulations, permitting, and other regulatory requirements impacting residential development and construction.
  • Oversee litigation strategy and manage relationships with outside counsel, ensuring effective representation and controlled legal expenses.
  • Monitor and interpret changes in state, federal, and local laws and regulations affecting homebuilding and real estate operations, ensuring ongoing compliance.
  • Conduct legal research and ensure contracts, policies, and business practices comply with applicable statutes, regulations, and case law.
  • Manage legal timelines, filings, and court requirements to ensure deadlines and procedural obligations are met.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Juris Doctor (JD) required; undergraduate or graduate education in business administration, real estate, or construction-related fields is a plus.
  • Admission to practice law in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, with a license in good standing.
  • Minimum of 10 years of legal experience in a law firm or 6 years as in-house corporate.
  • Demonstrated experience serving as General Counsel or senior legal leader, preferably within homebuilding, residential construction, real estate development, or construction law.
  • Strong working knowledge of residential real estate law, land use and zoning, construction law, contracts, litigation, labor and employment law, and warranty issues.
  • Proven experience advising on corporate governance, financial matters, securities compliance, and regulatory issues in a corporate or real estate/construction environment.
  • Demonstrated expertise in handling complex commercial transactions, mergers and acquisitions, financing arrangements, and tax planning/controversy matters.
  • Excellent communication, negotiation, and analytical skills, with the ability to translate legal issues into practical business guidance.
  • Proven ability to anticipate legal risks in a fast-paced, customer-facing homebuilding environment.
