General Laborer - Visitor Experience - FT

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • May supervise part-time and seasonal staff and volunteers
  • Responsible for maintenance of all of downtown campus grounds, including Smart Streets, East Race, East Bank Trail, Seitz Park, LINC Trail, Four Winds Field, Leighton Plaza, Jon Hunt Plaza, and Michigan Street Plaza between Wayne and Colfax streets
  • General grounds maintenance including but not limited to: mowing, trimming of grass and bushes; snow removal; leaf removal; power washing; trash bag changes; debris pick-up; landscape maintenance
  • Receive direction from the VPA Horticulturist on the maintenance of the landscaping product
  • Perform light custodial duties if immediate customer needs arises
  • Assist with hauling and material handling of site furniture and amenities related to park use and special events
  • Inspect condition and cleanliness of downtown infrastructure; turns in all associated work orders for repair
  • Accurately fill out daily logs of work completed, works orders needed for repairs, paperwork for necessary supplies and materials
  • Properly and safely operate various types of tools & equipment including but not limited to: pickup truck with plow, UTV, street sweepers, push lawn mowers, RC mower and controller, weed eaters, hedge trimmers, shovels, rakes, brooms, tablet, cell phone, etc.
  • Climb and work from ladder or high places
  • Aid and assist other maintenance and operations personnel
  • Maintain clean and safe work areas, tools and equipment
  • Interact with co-workers and the public with tact and diplomacy
  • Maintain a positive attitude and consistent performance
  • Manage time, make sound decisions and work independently
  • Follow directions and relay work progress in an effective manner
  • Follow safety procedures, wearing appropriate personal protective equipment and maintaining a safe work environment.
  • Perform other duties and assume other responsibilities as apparent or as assigned

  • Ability to communicate with the public with a focus on positive customer service
  • Ability to establish effective working relationships with others
  • Ability to maintain best practices and learn new maintenance procedures
  • Ability to work independently and to complete daily activities according to work schedule
  • Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, safety rules, and memos

  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions
  • Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations
  • Ability to perform physical labor under adverse field conditions

EDUCATION / QUALIFICATIONS

  • Must be 18 years of age or older
  • High school diploma or equivalent education preferred
  • Experience in grounds, trades, or custodial maintenance a plus
  • Knowledge of City properties and maintenance programs a plus
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
  • Valid Driver's License required

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk talk and hear. The employee is frequently required to reach with hands and arms, use hands to finger, handle or feel objects, tools, or controls. The employee must occasionally stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required in this job include close and distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

The work environment be primarily outside in various weather conditions (extreme heat, extreme cold, rain, snow, etc.). The employee may work near water, moving mechanical parts, around fumes or airborne particles, and with vibration. The employee may be exposed to oils, greases, solvents, and other chemicals that may be hazardous. Noise conditions can vary from quiet to very loud.

SCHEDULE:

40 hours per week with potential overtime opportunities

Spring/Summer: 6:00am - 2:30pm

Fall/Winter: 7:00am 3:30pm
