Under general supervision, to perform semi-skilled work in the maintenance and repair of mechanical and electrical equipment, buildings, hospital and office furniture and equipment; to perform chemical water treatment; to maintain a tool crib.
Sufficient training and experience in general maintenance mechanical and electrical repair work to demonstrate possession of the following knowledge and abilities:
Training and Experience Note: The knowledge and abilities required to perform this function are attained through possession of a high school diploma or equivalent and one (1) year of experience equivalent to a General Maintenance Mechanic I in Santa Clara County.
Possession of a valid California Driver's License prior to appointment and the ability to qualify for and maintain a County Driver's Permit.
Knowledge of:
- Common tools and equipment used in carpentry, painting, electrical service, plumbing and related activities;
- Safety practices appropriate to the equipment and procedures to perform the assigned maintenance work;
- A wide variety of operating and mechanical principles;
- Occupational hazards and safety precautions;
- Record keeping practices;
- Basic computer operation, such as email, internet navigation, and document filing/retrieval.
Ability to:
- Independently perform the tasks described above;
- Make repairs in emergency situations;
- Follow oral and written directions;
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work;
- Use County equipment safely and in compliance with safety limits and standards;
- Apply basic measurements and mathematical concepts in line of work;
- Keep simple records and prepare simple reports of work accomplished.
Skill in:
The use and maintenance of hand and power tools used in general maintenance and repair work.
Special Requirements:
- Ascend and descend ladders that are over six feet tall with tools and equipment where the ladder has a weight limitation of 350 pounds;
- Safely move and lift objects that weigh up to 50 pounds;
- Work in small, confined, and similar spaces;
- Perform manual tasks as necessary;
- Work on weekends, holidays and at odd or irregular hours.
