General Manager - Wellness

About the role

Lead one of the nation’s premier corporate fitness destinations. The Walton Family Whole Health & Fitness Center, managed by HealthFitness, is seeking a dynamic General Manager to oversee a state‑of‑the‑art wellness facility serving Walmart associates and leadership. This role calls for a visible, relationship‑driven leader who can inspire a high‑performing leadership team, cultivate strong partnerships with Walmart stakeholders, and create an exceptional member experience every day. Flexibility is essential, with rotating weekends and some early morning and evening hours required to support a vibrant, full‑service operation.

Leads and standardizes Whole Health operations across all business units, ensuring quality, safety, service excellence, and strong staff/member communication. Partners with the client to set and deliver the annual strategy—programming, outcomes, reporting, and marketing support—while monitoring performance and driving continuous improvement.

Key Accountabilities

  • Manage and direct all business operational, facility and program service aspects, ensuring consistency amongst all the Whole Health business units (fitness, aquatics, recreation, member services, whole health, and youth activity) in accordance with HealthFitness operational, quality, safety and service standards. Engages with both staff and members fostering open communication and feedback channels.

  • Collaborates with client to lead the development and implementation of the yearly Whole Health strategic business plan to identify contract deliverables, program/service offerings, targeted outcomes and reporting metrics, and support marketing strategy to ensure that both high customer/ member satisfaction is maintained and overall client established business objectives are met. Maintains a focus on innovation and pioneering deliverables

  • Partners with HealthFitness onsite leadership team to review activity, operations to determine changes in programs or operations. Reviews and maintains ongoing visibility into the operating results of all programs and initiatives; regularly compares performance to established objectives; proactively addresses underperformance; and ensures timely, clear communication of outcomes, risks, and corrective actions to client leadership.

  • Interfaces with the client liaison(s) and peripheral departments as appropriate to assess needs and to continually identify programming solutions to drive engagement and Whole Health initiatives. Build and sustain meaningful relationships with the client by fostering trust, transparency, demonstrating empathy, and creating a welcoming environment that supports each individual’s whole health journey.

  • Adherence to the program budget to ensure expenditures are made in accordance with applicable policies and procedures. Allocates operating budgets to departments. Reviews, advises, and approves all purchasing and expenses in collaboration with client leadership. Supervises the reconciliation of all revenues. Completes regular price analysis of market and provides recommendations to support operational strategy.

  • Responsible for monthly, quarterly and annual reporting with support from HealthFitness data analytics. Responsible for contract compliance Partners with Client Success Leadership to negotiate staff compensation and/or other financial considerations.

  • Creates and owns the talent and organizational strategy including but not limited to the recruitment, hiring, training, supervision, and scheduling of of direct reports and supports all hiring and onboarding efforts for the program. The GM should ensure all team members are fully engaged with an organizational strategy that allows for cross training and an efficient utilization of all staff throughout their shifts.

  • Conducts formal performance appraisals of the lead management team staff on an annual basis and initiates formal corrective action process when warranted.

  • Leads regular staff meetings and attends business unit group staff meetings to ensure associates are informed about HealthFitness, client and program events, initiatives and status.

  • Ultimate responsibility for the safety, security, and legal issues associated with the operation, and all member relation issues.

  • Accountable for final review and approval for member communications. Ensures the education, training, implementation and ongoing delivery of foundational Whole Health principles amongst the entire team in alignment with client culture and expectations.

  • Other duties as needed/assigned.

Minimum Requirements

  • Master’s degree or the equivalent combination of education, certifications and experience.

  • Must hold a degree or professional certification in the field of business or finance.

  • Minimum of 10 years’ experience with the majority of that in a large community/commercial/corporate environment with multifaceted programming that includes fitness/recreation/aquatics.

  • CPR, First Aid and AED certification through the American Heart Association, Red Cross or American Safety & Health Institute.

  • Strong knowledge of financial instruments and financial practices sufficient to manage an overall budget of $10 million plus.

  • Continuing education required for maintaining current certifications.

  • Demonstrated experience of leading a high performing team.

  • Experience leading mid-level management, strong leadership, and team management skills.

  • Entrepreneurial and membership growth mindset.

  • Experience in managing and supporting deliverables for remote staff.

  • Interpersonal and customer service skills including the ability to motivate others creating an exceptional member/staff experience.

Preferred

  • Certified Pool Operator (CPO)

  • LG and/or WSI Instructor Certified

  • Demonstrates knowledge of Whole Health.

Applicants must meet hiring requirements including but not limited to pre-employment drug test. Compensation: $120,000/Year - $130,000/Year. Pay is dependent on experience and qualifications. Opportunity for additional performance-based bonus.
