General Practice Nurse

Location: Walnut Tree Surgery
Salary: £22 - £26 per hour based on experience
Hours: Part time

  • Monday: 09:00 – 18:00 (30 minutes unpaid lunch)
  • Tuesday: 11:00 – 18:30 (30 minutes unpaid lunch)
  • Wednesday: 7:15 – 16:30 (30 minutes unpaid lunch)
  • Thursday: 08:00 – 17:00 (30 minutes unpaid lunch)

Total: 32 hours and 45 minutes

About the Role

We are seeking a dedicated and compassionate Practice Nurse to join our friendly and supportive GP surgery team. This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced nurse to deliver high-quality patient care within a primary care setting.

The successful candidate will play a key role in providing a wide range of nursing services, supporting both acute and long-term condition management, and promoting health and wellbeing within the community. The role requires a high level of autonomous working, with responsibility for managing clinics independently, as well as the ability to lead and supervise a small team of Healthcare Assistants (HCAs), ensuring the delivery of safe, effective, and patient-centred care.

In addition, the postholder will take an active role in Infection Prevention and Control (IPC), contributing to maintaining a safe clinical environment and adhering to best practice guidelines. Responsibilities will also include supporting and supervising HCAs in their clinical duties and development, ensuring high standards of care are maintained. The successful candidate will be expected to keep Patient Group Directions (PGDs) up to date, and support regulatory compliance, particularly in areas such as safe vaccination administration and clinical governance protocols.

Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver high-quality nursing care to patients of all ages
  • Perform cervical cytology (smears) in line with national screening programmes
  • Administer childhood and baby immunisations in accordance with UK schedules
  • Provide injections, including routine and travel vaccinations
  • Assess, treat, and manage wounds, including dressings and ongoing care
  • Support chronic disease management (e.g. diabetes, asthma, COPD)
  • Undertake health promotion and screening activities
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date patient records
  • Work collaboratively with GPs and the wider multidisciplinary team
  • Work autonomously, managing own workload and running nurse-led clinics independently
  • Lead and supervise Healthcare Assistants (HCAs), supporting their clinical practice, training, and development
  • Take responsibility for Infection Prevention and Control (IPC), ensuring compliance with current guidelines and maintaining a safe clinical environment
  • Ensure Patient Group Directions (PGDs) are kept up to date and adhered to in clinical practice
  • Support and monitor compliance with clinical governance standards, particularly in relation to safe vaccination administration and associated protocols

Essential Skills & Experience

  • Registered Nurse (RGN) with valid NMC registration
  • Proven experience working in primary care or general practice
  • Competency in:
  • Cervical smears (cytology) – essential
  • Baby/childhood immunisations – essential
  • Injections and vaccinations – essential
  • Wound care and dressings – essential
  • Strong clinical assessment and decision-making skills
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal abilities
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team

Desirable Skills

  • Experience in chronic disease management
  • Knowledge of SystmOne
  • Travel health qualifications
  • Prescribing qualification (or willingness to undertake training)
