Position Overview:

The Machinist Supervisor provides leadership and technical direction for all machining operations—both fixed and mobile—in support of mine and plant maintenance. This position ensures that all machining, line boring, and precision repair work is performed safely, efficiently, and to the highest quality standards. The Machinist Supervisor coordinates daily activities, supports planning, and develops a skilled team capable of executing complex rebuilds, machining, and field repairs on heavy mining and process equipment.

Essential Functions:

  • Supervise and coordinate daily activities of machinists, line boring technicians, and machine shop personnel.
  • Oversee both fixed (shop-based) and mobile (field-based) machining operations to support mine and mill maintenance.
  • Manage and execute precision machining, line boring, fabrication, and rebuild work for components such as pumps, gearboxes, crushers, mills, shafts, and other rotating equipment.
  • Perform and oversee pump rebuilds, including mechanical seals, bearings, and impeller repair and testing.
  • Operate and supervise use of large engine lathes, milling machines, boring mills, and radial drills.
  • Plan and prioritize machining work in coordination with planners, supervisors, and operations to minimize downtime.
  • Develop, implement, and maintain Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and Job Safety Analyses (JSAs) for machining and rebuilding tasks.
  • Support and enforce preventive maintenance and lubrication programs for shop and field equipment.
  • Ensure all machine work meets OEM specifications, precision tolerances, and company quality standards.
  • Maintain accurate records of work completed, equipment status, and technical service reports.
  • Lead by example in promoting and maintaining a strong safety culture throughout the department.
  • Train, mentor, and develop machinists and apprentices to enhance technical and professional performance.
  • Coordinate with vendors, contractors, and OEM representatives for specialized machining support or component repair.
  • Support reliability initiatives, including root cause failure analysis and equipment improvement projects.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs):

  • Strong knowledge of machining, line boring, and equipment rebuild principles and techniques.
  • Knowledge of oil sampling and analysis.
  • Working knowledge of shop and field preventive maintenance processes and field lubrication servicing procedures.
  • Must maintain daily service and equipment status reports for technical communication.
  • Strong leadership and decision-making skills.
  • Ability to teach, mentor, and train employees in machining best practices and safety standards.
  • Ability to be trained and operate aerial lifts, reach forklifts, boom trucks, knuckle booms, and overhead cranes.
  • Effective written, visual, electronic, and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to understand and apply written and verbal instructions and safety-related procedures in English.
  • Strong math skills, including ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, and compute rates, ratios, and percentages.
  • Ability to interpret blueprints, mechanical drawings, and technical specifications, and produce accurate machining work accordingly.
  • Ability to manage time effectively, set priorities, and manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Ability to perform under stressful and adverse conditions while maintaining sound judgment.
  • Teamwork-oriented with excellent problem-solving and negotiation skills.
  • Proficiency in planning, documentation, and CMMS systems (SAP or equivalent).
  • Commitment to continuous improvement in safety, quality, and performance.
  • Physical ability to perform Heavy Work—exerting up to 80 lbs occasionally, 50 lbs frequently, and 20 lbs constantly to move objects.
  • Ability to work in extreme temperatures, vibration, noise, and confined spaces, and near or with chemicals as required.
  • You must be able to wear a respirator and other PPE in environments with fumes, dust, or gases.
  • Ability to ascend and descend ladders, scaffolding, and ramps with agility.
  • Availability to work any shift, including weekends and holidays, in a 24/7/365 mine operation.
Requirements:

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Journeyman Machinist certification, Technical Diploma, or equivalent trade qualification required.
  • Minimum 5–7 years of machining experience in a heavy industrial, mining, or process plant environment.
  • Minimum 3 years of supervisory or lead-hand experience in a maintenance or machining setting.
  • Proficiency with large machining equipment such as engine lathes, vertical/horizontal mills, radial drills, and boring mills.
  • Demonstrated expertise in line boring, thread repair, keyway cutting, shaft repair, and portable/mobile machining.
  • Experience with pump and rotating equipment rebuilds, including alignment, balance, and seal installation.
  • Strong understanding of lubrication systems and preventive maintenance standards for rotating and stationary equipment.
  • Familiarity with mobile machine systems for on-equipment repair in pit and mill areas.
  • Solid understanding of equipment tolerances, surface finishes, and fits for heavy-duty components.
  • Working knowledge of safety standards, risk assessments, and SOP development in an industrial environment.
  • Experience with planning, scheduling, and coordinating work through a CMMS system.
  • Proven ability to lead and develop teams while maintaining a culture of safety, quality, and accountability
