GPS / Machine Control Specialist (Heavy Equipment Operator) – Jacksonville, FL

At Petticoat-Schmitt Civil Contractors, Inc., accuracy, accountability, and teamwork drive everything we build. We’re looking for a GPS / Machine Control Specialist (Heavy Equipment Operator) — a skilled professional who combines hands-on heavy equipment experience with a deep understanding of GPS and machine control systems.

In this role, you’ll operate GPS-equipped dozers and excavators while also serving as the company’s subject matter expert — helping train crews, verify models, and ensure accuracy across our projects. You’ll be a vital bridge between field operations and technology, ensuring Petticoat-Schmitt continues to lead the industry in precision and performance.

An Exciting Career Opportunity

We’re not just looking for a GPS-savvy operator — we’re looking for someone who wants to grow into a lead technical resource for our field teams.

If you’re an experienced heavy equipment operator who’s confident using Leica (preferred), Trimble, or Topcon GPS systems and want to advance your career into a training and leadership path, this role was built for you.

Survey experience is a bonus — not a requirement. We’ll teach the right person how to integrate survey and GPS workflows. What matters most is your field experience, commitment to accuracy, and passion for helping others succeed.

What You’ll Do

Equipment Operation & GPS Setup

  • Operate GPS-enabled heavy equipment (dozers, excavators) safely and efficiently on active job sites.

  • Set up GPS machine control systems daily, including base stations, rovers, localizations, site calibrations, and coordinate systems.

  • Understand and clearly articulate how the GPS system functions — including control points, alignment files, surfaces/models, design files, and GPS corrections — to ensure accurate and consistent performance across the crew.

  • Verify grades, slopes, and elevations against plans and digital models.

  • Support operators and foremen in setting up and running GPS and machine control systems.

Training & Field Support

  • Serve as the company’s GPS and machine control subject matter expert and primary trainer.

  • Teach operators, foremen, and field personnel how to properly set up, initialize, run, and verify GPS systems (Leica, Trimble, Topcon).

  • Explain system functions in clear, practical terms — including model loading, site control, calibration, offsets, surface selection, and troubleshooting.

  • Troubleshoot GPS, rover, and machine control issues; coordinate vendor support as needed.

  • Assist in developing and standardizing GPS procedures, best practices, and field checklists.

Model & Data Management

  • Load and maintain 3D models, localizations, and project control data.

  • Collaborate with survey and estimating teams to confirm design accuracy and data alignment.

  • Manage GPS equipment software updates, data backups, and field data consistency.

Cross-Team Collaboration

  • Work closely with superintendents, project managers, and survey leadership to align GPS data with construction needs.

  • Provide field-driven feedback to improve efficiency, accuracy, and project outcomes.

What We’re Looking For

Experience & Skills

  • Minimum 3 years of heavy civil construction experience as a dozer or excavator operator.

  • Proven experience operating with GPS or machine control systems (Leica preferred; Trimble and Topcon valued).

  • Strong understanding of grades, elevations, slopes, and digital model interpretation.

  • Ability to teach, coach, and communicate with crew members and field leaders.

  • Strong mechanical and troubleshooting ability.

  • Basic IT proficiency (iPad/smartphone for reports, uploads, and equipment tracking).

  • Familiarity with AutoCAD Civil 3D or model files is a plus — not required.

Education & Training

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.

  • OSHA-10 certification (or ability to obtain).

  • Additional GPS/survey training is a plus.

  • Survey background is beneficial but not required — we will train the right candidate.
