Duties and Responsibilities:
- Under the supervision of the director of Ka Ulu Hoi, assist with the writing, editing, and publication of Kawaihuelani’s monthly online newspaper.
- Work with the director to proofread and edit submissions prior to publication.
- Upload completed articles each month to the Ka Ulu Hoi website and social media accounts, and update these pages as necessary.
- Acquire pictures for each article published, as needed.
- Meet with student-writers of the newspaper, both individually and in groups as necessary, to plan, develop, and improve their submissions to the paper.
- Contribute one original article to each issue of Ka Ulu Hoi published during the GA’s tenure.
- Under the supervision of the director, conduct research that will enhance the mentorship of student-writers.
- Other duties, as assignedby the director.
Minimum Qualifications
- Full time Graduate Student in good standing.
- BA in Hawaiian language.
- Ability to edit written Hawaiian using various strategies, and in accordance with the context of language production (e.g., standard University Hawaiian versus native speaker language production).
- Experience writing Hawaiian news articles and opinion pieces, as well as the ability to mentor students relatively new to this practice.
- Comfortable using Google Docs, Microsoft Word, and Zoom.
Desired Qualifications
- Current standing as a Graduate Student in Kawaihuelani.
- Experience managing a professional website and/or social media account.
- Experience taking video and stills for online publication.
- Research experience in Hawaiian language newspapers.
