Oakland County is looking for a Graphic Designer who’s passionate about transforming ideas into visuals that inform, inspire, and engage our workforce. As part of our Human Resources team, you’ll play a key role in shaping how thousands of employees experience HR initiatives, programs, and organizational updates. If you love design variety, collaborative teamwork, and creating work that makes a real impact across an entire organization, this role is for you.

What You’ll Do:
  • Design and produce a wide range of internal communications materials, including presentations, newsletters, flyers, brochures, maps, posters, directories, logos, social media assets, intranet content, and displays.
  • Use modern publishing and graphics software to combine text, imagery, and design elements into polished, professional artwork.
  • Prepare and edit photos, scanning, color correcting, retouching, and optimizing images for both digital and print materials.
  • Create original artwork and illustrations using digital drawing tools or by enhancing traditional sketches and existing graphics.
  • Build visual aids, posters, overlays, and supporting graphics for HR presentations and internal events.
  • Develop compelling slideshow presentations that align with speeches, talking points, and key messages.
  • Maintain the County’s brand identity, ensuring consistent use of fonts, colors, imagery, and design standards.
  • Coordinate with printers and marketing vendors to ensure accurate, high quality production and on time delivery.
  • Size, crop, format, and place images and illustrations to support a variety of divisional needs.
  • Utilize countywide and department specific software to manage, track, and complete creative assignments.

Minimum Qualifications

REQUIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

A. REQUIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

1. a. Possess an Associate’s Degree or equivalent education from an accredited college or university with a major in graphic arts, graphic design, commercial art, or a closely related field.
b. Have two (2) years of full-time work experience in graphic preparation, including layout and design preparation of camera-ready artwork, desktop publishing, or a closely related area;

OR

2. a. Must be a high school graduate or have a certificate of successful completion of the General Education Development (GED) test.

b. Have four (4) years of full-time work experience in graphic preparation, including layout and design preparation of camera-ready artwork, desktop publishing or closely related area.

3. Possess a valid motor vehicle operator’s or chauffeur’s license.

NOTE: A Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university with a major in any of the fields described in 1 above may substitute for the experience requirement.

ADDITIONAL DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS

Considerable knowledge of graphic design software including, but not limited to, Adobe InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, Acrobat.

Considerable knowledge of typography, photography, printing procedures, color separation, design principles, Web design and video production.

Considerable ability to work within structured deadlines.

Considerable ability to manage multiple projects.

Considerable ability to establish and maintain effective working relations with administrators, other employees, vendors, and the general public.

Considerable ability to make routine decisions in accordance with established departmental policies and procedures.

Considerable knowledge of and ability to utilize current word processing, spreadsheet, database, e-mail, and Internet software.

Reasonable ability to follow complex written and oral instructions.

Strong portfolio of creative work in both print and digital media.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Must maintain a valid United States motor vehicle operator's or chauffeur's license.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Designs and produces various publications and artwork for divisional projects such as slide presentations, newsletters, signs, flyers, brochures, directories, maps, posters, billboards, logos, website, social media, exhibits/displays and illustrations.

Utilizes various publishing and graphics software programs to create and produce finished artwork combining text and graphic elements.

Uses scanner to scan slides and photographic prints, and an image editing program to refine and color correct or paint full color photographs, duotones, and grayscale images.

Designs and assembles exhibits and displays such as information signs, and photo displays.

Designs and executes logos/symbols for special projects, letterheads, and business cards used in various County departments.

Creates precise art illustrations using scans of traditional drawings, digital drawing skills or by modifying existing digital art files.

Creates illustrations, posters, and overlays as visual aids for divisional presentations and for special presentations by members of County departments.

Prepares slide presentations to correspond with speeches, presentations, and written materials.

Maintains brand identity with attention to font, color, and design elements.

Consults with printers regarding technical quality requirements and printing deadlines to ensure that artwork is produced correctly and on time.

Sizes, crops and places photos and illustrations to produce artwork for various divisional projects.

Utilizes current Countywide and/or department specific software to complete assignments.

ADDITIONAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Compiles and archives digital files, including image files and page layout files.

ESSENTIAL MENTAL & PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Ability to communicate to accurately convey information.

Ability to use digital and photographic graphics equipment and software.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Work is performed in a typical office setting.

Depending on department assignment, some exposure to weather conditions may exist.
