Job Summary

The CU Advancement Marketing and Communications Division seeks a highly creative and technically skilled Graphic Designer to develop compelling digital and print media that supports the university's branding, fundraising, alumni relations, and communication goals! This position needs strong design aesthetic, a storytelling approach, and a proven track record of producing polished multimedia assets across print and digital platforms.
The graphic designer plays a key role on a highly collaborative marketing and communications team within the Office of Advancement at CU Boulder that seeks to increase philanthropic support and engagement. Through partnership with colleagues and experts across the university, the Creative Communications and Services supplies visual expertise to projects that are rooted in strategy. We are looking for someone who has a balance of great visual design coupled with an ability to see big- picture strategy.
This position reports to the Sr. Director of Creative Strategy and Services to assist with the design of marketing and communications projects from concept through to final production. The designer is responsible for the conceptualization, presentation, adaptation and execution of design solutions that meet marketing and communications strategies and are aligned with the University of Colorado Boulder brand. The ideal candidate will have a keen ability to articulate the reasoning and strategy guiding their work. They will be thoughtful about the potential impact of the work they create and strive to create inclusive and accessible communications. In addition to aligning their creative solutions with the university's mission, they will keep their audience and their interests in mind as a guiding context. They are at ease designing from scratch as well as responding to established art direction. What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

Produce and be responsible for creative solutions from concept to execution, across multiple platforms and formats
  • Visually communicate mission, goals and brand identity across digital channels (websites, social media, email, etc.) and print materials (signage, brochures, reports, event programs, proposals, packaging and merchandise, etc.).
  • Present work and creative rationale to colleagues.
  • Generate creative concepts and collaborate with the Advancement Marketing and Communications team, including editors, writers, visual designers, content developers, photographers and videographers to work on multi-platform and integrated marketing and communication plans.
  • Build assets for digital channels like email, web and social media.
  • Participate in group critiques in support of consistent and best-in-class creative work.
Project management and supervision
  • Collaborate with various departments and team members to provide professional recommendations for concept, art direction, production, etc.
  • Work with outside vendors to meet production timelines.
  • Supervise and mentor a student designer, helping grow their professional skills and establishing a productive workflow of incoming design demands.
Brand management
  • Help support Advancement’s digital asset management system, including building editable, user-friendly templates and uploading new assets as necessary.
  • Coordinate with central marketing and communications, plus college, school and unit teams regarding consistency of the CU Boulder brand.
Other duties as assigned
  • Stay up to date with industry trends and tools.
  • Complete other design projects assigned by the Sr. Director of Creative Strategy and Services and/or Sr. Visual Designer.
  • Work with the Standard Operating Procedures for the marcom team, ensuring quality and efficiency in our work.
  • Represent the marketing and communications team in various meetings and endeavors.

What You Should Know

  • This role is in a hybrid work situation, working a mix of days on campus and remotely each week.
  • This role may require occasional travel based on business needs.

What We Can Offer

The salary range is $58,200 - $65,000 annually. Relocation assistance is available within Advancement guidelines.

What We Require

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience or combination of education and experience may substitute.
  • 1 years of professional graphic design experience, for both digital and print media that includes:
    • Experience presenting creative rationale to a range of partners.
    • Experience collaborating with cross-functional teams, including other marketing subject areas, like writers, digital strategists, videographers and photographers.
  • Software Proficiency: Microsoft Office products, Zoom, Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign).

What You Will Need

  • Proficient knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite and relevant apps for design and digital technology.
  • Solid understanding of how marketing strategies drive and inform creative concept development and output.
  • Advanced understanding of design principles, including typography, composition, hierarchy and use of color.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Skilled use of tact, negotiation and working toward effective solutions.
  • Proven self-starter with the ability to work independently, but also actively seek and value feedback.
  • Ability to focus on design details, while also keeping an eye on the high-level strategy.
  • Understanding of email, web and digital capabilities, limitations, and standard processes.
  • Great teammate who strives to meet project, strategy or partner needs.

What We Would Like You to Have

  • Professional graphic design experience for both digital and print media.
  • Experience working in higher education or purposeful organizations.
  • Familiarity with UI/UX and digital accessibility standard methodologies.
  • Working knowledge of HTML and CSS.
  • Excellent creative-thinking skills; adaptability to new technology or communications avenues.
  • Experience managing brand design assets and systems.
