Job Overview

The Port Townsend & Jefferson County Leader is seeking a production designer to help produce the weekly newspaper and create advertising for local businesses.

This position focuses on page layout for the print edition of The Leader and the creation of effective commercial advertising for both print and web. The work is deadline-driven and requires strong attention to detail, organization and professionalism.

We are looking for someone who is genuinely excited about design. The right candidate pays attention to typography, layout and visual balance, and takes pride in producing clean, effective work. This role requires someone who can follow established style guides and production standards, while also bringing the skill and judgment to make the newspaper and its advertising better.

Production designers work closely with the newsroom, advertising staff and press operators to ensure the paper and its advertising products are produced accurately and on time.

Minimum Requirements

• At least three years of professional experience using Adobe Creative Suite, specifically Adobe InDesign and Adobe Photoshop
• Strong understanding of page layout, typography and design principles
• Ability to manage multiple projects under tight deadlines
• Ability to follow direction precisely while also working independently
• Experience working on Mac systems

Applicants without at least three years of experience in InDesign and Photoshop should not apply.

Primary Responsibilities

• Produce news pages for the print edition of The Leader under the direction of the editor
• Design advertising for the print and web editions of The Leader
• Work professionally with clients, advertising staff, newsroom staff and press operators
• Coordinate with other departments to meet production deadlines
• Assist with commercial printing and design work that comes through the newspaper, including brochures, logos, charts, maps and other marketing materials

Work Environment

This role requires someone who communicates clearly, works cooperatively with others, and stays focused on meeting deadlines. Production designers often work independently, so the ability to stay organized and move projects forward without constant supervision is essential.

Location

This is an in-person position in Port Townsend, Washington. Applicants must be able to commute or relocate before starting work.

Job Types: Full-time, Part-time

Pay: $20.00 - $25.00 per hour

Expected hours: 38.0 – 40.0 per week
