This is a temporary position that is expected to last until June 30th, 2026. This position will remain open for a minimum of seven (7) days. The College reserves the right to close the recruitment at any time after the minimum posting period once a sufficient applicant pool has been established. All classified positions will start their salary at Step A.

Olympic College is seeking a temporary Grounds Nursery Specialist 3. This position performs multiple duties related to the care and maintenance of the Olympic College grounds. The Grounds and Nursery Specialist 3 requires skilled gardening tasks requiring knowledge of cultivation and maintenance of trees, lawns, and ornamental plants. Responsibilities include testing soils, pruning, transplanting plant materials, and applying chemicals. Propagates and cares for trees, shrubs, and forage plants. This position maintains the grounds on the Bremerton, Poulsbo, and Shelton campuses. This position reports to the Building and Grounds supervisor.

Essential Functions

  • Prepare soil for planting; plant seed, sod, turf, bulbs, plants, trees, and shrubs.
  • Seed, mow, irrigate, sweep, fertilize, top dress, edge, aerat,e and maintain lawns.
  • Operate power and motorized equipment such as weed trimmers, chain saws, backpack blowers, rototillers, light tractors, front-end loaders, small trucks, lawn mowers, sweepers, aerators, sod cutters, and snow blowers. Use a variety of manual tools and equipment such as rakes, pruning shears, hand edgers, shovels, wheelbarrows, and pesticide sprayers.
  • Transplant seedlings, trees, shrubs, and assorted nursery stock.
  • Prune, spray, and fertilize trees, shrubs, and ground covers.
  • Maintains adequate supplies and materials inventory.
  • Diagnoses and treats plant diseases and pests.
  • Operates and maintains assigned vehicle.
  • Propagates plants by cutting, seeding, grafting, layering, and budding.
  • Repair, maintain, and operate a variety of grounds mechanical equipment, systems, and apparatus.
  • Rake and remove leaves; control weeds by pulling, hoeing, and/or spraying.
  • Apply pesticides and herbicides to greenery and plant material, observing applicable safety regulations.
  • Remove debris, leaves, brush, snow, and ice from areas such as walks, stairs, roads, ramps, and parking facilities. Apply ice melter, sand, and gravel.
  • Clean, service, and maintain tools and equipment, including power equipment; perform preventive maintenance according to established procedures and regulations
  • Install and maintain campus fences, signs, etc.
  • Install, maintain, and repair irrigation and storm drainage systems.
  • Collect and remove accumulated litter on campus, in parking areas, and along the campus perimeter.
  • Formulates and presents recommendations for layout or improvements of grounds.
  • Participate in formulating annual operating plans and take responsibility for executing plans, schedules, planning dates, and other work to coincide with seasons and plant life cycles.
  • Supervise, direct, and lead employees.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Six (6) months of full-time equivalent (FTE) experience in a related field of grounds maintenance, gardening, plant care, or landscaping.
  • Basic level computer competency.
  • Valid WA State Driver's License
  • Ability to lift 50lbs.

This is a temporary full-time classified position scheduled to work XX hours a week, with a salary range of $38,004.00 - $50,328.00 annually. All classified positions will start their salary at Step A, when you have completed six months of probation, you will receive a 5 percent pay increase.

A collective bargaining agreement exists, and this position is covered by the Washington Public Employees Association (WPEA) Union. This position is not initially eligible for benefits upon hire but could qualify if the employee works 480 hours in a rolling six-month period to become eligible for health benefits. If the position becomes eligible, they will qualify for the following benefits:
