Job Summary
The Hatchery Technician is responsible for supporting the daily operations of the aquaculture hatchery, ensuring optimal breeding, incubation, and early-stage growth of aquatic species. The role involves maintaining water quality, monitoring fish health, managing hatchery equipment, and assisting with broodstock management to achieve efficient and sustainable hatchery production.
Key ResponsibilitiesHatchery Operations
- Assist in broodstock management, spawning, and fertilization processes.
- Collect, incubate, and monitor fish eggs until hatching.
- Maintain larval rearing tanks and nursery systems.
- Grade, count, and transfer larvae and fingerlings to grow-out systems.
Fish Health & Husbandry
- Feed larvae, fry, and broodstock according to hatchery feeding schedules.
- Monitor fish behavior, growth, and mortality rates.
- Identify signs of diseases and report issues to the Hatchery Manager.
- Maintain proper sanitation and biosecurity procedures to prevent disease spread.
Water Quality Management
- Monitor and record key water parameters such as temperature, dissolved oxygen, pH, salinity, ammonia, and turbidity.
- Operate aeration, filtration, and water recirculation systems.
- Ensure optimal environmental conditions for fish development.
Equipment Maintenance
- Operate and maintain hatchery equipment including pumps, filters, incubators, aerators, and tanks.
- Perform routine cleaning, maintenance, and minor repairs.
- Ensure all hatchery equipment operates efficiently and safely.
Record Keeping & Reporting
- Maintain accurate hatchery production records including:
- Egg production
- Hatching rates
- Survival rates
- Feeding schedules
- Mortality data
- Assist in preparing hatchery reports and production data for management review.
Health, Safety & Compliance
- Follow all company health and safety policies.
- Ensure compliance with aquaculture biosecurity and environmental regulations.
- Maintain cleanliness and hygiene in the hatchery facility.
Qualifications
- Diploma or Bachelor’s Degree in Aquaculture, Fisheries, Marine Biology, Animal Science, or related field.
- 1–3 years of experience in aquaculture hatchery operations (preferred).
- Knowledge of fish breeding, larval rearing, and water quality management.
- Basic understanding of RAS (Recirculating Aquaculture Systems) is an advantage.
