Why does the job exist?
This position supports the Hazardous Waste Bureau's Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) Group by leading efforts to prevent new contamination and address legacy pollution in alignment with the mission of the New Mexico Environment Department (NMED). This position ensures that environmental protection activities are scientifically sound, regulatory-compliant, and effectively implemented to safeguard public health and the environment. As a mid-level manager, this role provides leadership, direction, and oversight to scientific and technical staff engaged in complex hazardous waste, contamination, and environmental restoration projects. The position contributes strategic guidance, applies environmental science expertise, and ensures high-quality evaluations, recommendations, and decisions that advance NMED's goals at LANL and across the state.
How does it get done?
- Lead the LANL Group's implementation of regulatory requirements under the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) Permit, Consent Order, and Federal Facilities Compliance Order, ensuring environmental protection and statewide compliance
- Oversee RCRA permitting and corrective action activities, providing scientific and regulatory direction for complex hazardous¿ waste and remediation projects
- Evaluate and guide complex remediation strategies, making high-level technical decisions that align program direction with NMED's mission and environmental goals
- Represent the program in meetings and presentations with senior management, tribal governments, federal partners, stakeholders, and the public, ensuring clear communication and informed decision making
- Collaborate with Bureau leadership and financial staff on strategic planning, resource allocation, and program development to support long-term environmental priorities
- Provide leadership in developing regulations, policies, and program improvements; manage administrative, financial, technical, and programmatic functions
- Stay current on emerging Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) regulations, contaminants, and scientific protocols, integrating new requirements and best practices into program operations

Minimum Qualification
Bachelor's Degree in Physical, Natural, Biological, or Environmental Science, Soil Science, Engineering, or Chemistry and six (6) years of work experience in public/environmental health, environmental science, animal science, natural science, biological science, physical science, air quality management, engineering, chemistry, geology, hazardous waste management, wildlife management, and/or water resources. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling ten (10) years may substitute for the required education and experience.
Employment Requirements
Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license. Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course Certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive Defensive Driving Course Certification within six (6) months of date of hire as a condition of continued employment.
Working Conditions
Work is performed in an office setting with exposure to Visual/Video Display Terminal (VDT) and extensive personal computer and phone usage. Some sitting, standing, bending and reaching may be required. There may be repeated bending, squatting, and walking in the building. In-state travel, including overnight travel may be required. Outdoor field work may be required in all types of weather conditions.
