The Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD) Operator is primarily responsible for setup and completion of drilling variable sized underground holes and pulling back required conduit. The Drilling Operator will work with the Locator/Foreman and the Laborers to complete job requirements from start to finish on outside plant projects including digging boring pit, directional boring, pulling back of conduit, splicing of conduit sections, pulling fiber through conduit, setting hand holes, backfilling and seeding, core drilling and pot holing, building penetrations and close out pictures and redlines.
Responsibilities:

Operate Horizontal Directional Drill
-
Assist in potholing and remediation.

Assist with setting hand holes and completing tie ins.
-
Drive equipment to job site
-
Confirms with locator/lead the bore path to drill.
-
Set equipment up including the drill, water tanks and grounding the machine.

Drill out following the predetermined drill path to the exit pit.

Communicate with the locator/lead via radio to confirm the location of the drill head.

Assist with the installation of proper pulling gear and hook up product.

Reverse process to install product.
-
Oversee laborers and/or crew member’s work and monitor time usage.

Conduct post-job quality checks.

Clean, check fluid levels and conduct a visual inspection of vehicle/equipment to assure your vehicle/equipment is performing at optimum safety, perform the required pre-trip, post trip inspections and the required paperwork, perform needed maintenance including winterizing equipment.

Communicates with Supervisor daily to turn in required paperwork (i.e., Bore log, vehicle maintenance reports, etc.)

Follows specifications for the job and company policies.

Complies with safety procedures while driving and at job site.

Strive for optimal production while working safely and performing quality work.
Qualifications: All positions require participation in the federally compliant FMSCA drug and alcohol testing program. This includes both pre-employment and ongoing random testing.

1+ years of demonstrated Horizontal Directional Drilling experience.

Strong knowledge of underground utilities

Working knowledge of DOT regulations (Vehicle and Operator Qualifications) and OSHA regulations

Understanding of client and company work specifications.

Ability to comply with the “Operator’s Manual” for your particular equipment.

Ability to read and comprehend and follow all quality/safety policies and procedures.

Self-motivated, safety, quality and production minded.

Maintain valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL Class A)

Knowledge of underground potholing preferred
-
Ability to travel and work extended hours; overtime and weekends as needed.

Ability to work in an outdoor environment during extreme weather conditions at all times of the year.

Ability to stand, stoop, crouch, kneel, and perform other related physical activities for long periods of time.

Ability to lift and operate necessary materials to include small hand tools, power tools in a safe manner.
- Ability to lift and carry between 50 lbs. to 80 lbs. on a regular basis.

Authorized to work in the United States

Must be able to pass DOT required drug test and background check.
Physical Requirements:
-
Drive and operate a vehicle, and/or bucket truck. Must be able to drive or ride in a vehicle for up to four hours to travel to and from job sites.
-
Ability to safely work from heights, up to 50’ in bucket truck or ladder.
-
Manage pole climbing, working at heights, handling ladders, and pushing, pulling and bending equipment.
-
Ability to sit, stand, climb, kneel, bend, lift, crawl, squat, reach and utilize both hands and feet in an aerial and underground capacity.
- Environmental conditions: Must be able to work in different temperatures and changing weather conditions. exposure is heat, cold, dust, wet, vibration and very loud noise. Must be able to traverse and inspect all areas of jobsite in all types of weather; this may include walking, climbing, reaching, bending, crawling, or stretching.

Repeated and frequent ability to lift, from floor to above head 80 lbs. continuously and push and/or pull 50-pound loads at a time. Must have physical strength, balance, hand-eye coordination, and stamina necessary to complete jobs in various areas.

Must be able to stand and walk up to eight hours per day and climb multiple sets of stairs while carrying materials weighing between 40 and 60 pounds.

Must be able to clearly see color and shading in plans and materials. Must have vision to allow differences in colors, shades, and brightness.

Exposure to characteristic construction site dangers.
-
Must have flexibility in scheduling to meet the needs of the business.
