Head Baseball Coach

The Head Baseball Coach is responsible for following all SUNY Corning Community College and NJCAA guidelines in conjunction with the intercollegiate athletics program. Work in conjunction with the SDEM Department, and larger college community, to develop a competitive and respectful program that focusses on the student experience and fosters social and emotional growth as well as academic success for their student athletes. This is a contract position with a total compensation of $6,000.

Occasional meetings at different CCC locations and in the community may be required; travel to conferences and/or recruiting events are required. Travel to away games is also required via college provided transportation. Prolonged time sitting/standing working with student athletes at competitions and practices, ability to walk/move across campus including walking up and down stairs, ability to lift up to 20 pounds (occasionally may be more). Typical athletic sport environments, occasional outdoor activity may be required, dependent on the nature of the sport being coached. Essential Functions

Management of Practice and Competition (35%) -

  • Collaborate with Athletic Department Staff on developing a practice schedule; based on venue availability and the needs of the student athletes (classes/dining hall hours)
  • Enlist and supervise assistant coaching staff
  • Supervise all practices, scrimmages, games and events
  • Develop and implement appropriate practice and game plans and scrimmages
  • Review equipment and uniform needs at the beginning and end of competition season with the AD
  • Report all game scores and statistics to the AD within guidelines provided in the P&P Manual

Compliance (10%) -

  • Adherence to all CCC and NJCAA rules and regulations as outlined in the P&P manuals and NJCAA Handbook
  • Knowledge of NJCAA Eligibility Standards
  • Assist AD in management of all required NJCAA eligibility documents
  • Knowledge and enforcement of the CCC Student Athlete Code of Conduct as described in the P&P Manual
  • Attend required CCC staff meetings, Region III Coaches meetings and required trainings
  • Participate in at least one professional development activity per year
  • First Aid and CPR certified
  • Receive meal money prior to away games, arrange for meals and return the travel advance within 48 hours of the away event
  • Be familiar with sport syllabi and grading system as provided by AD and enter final grades

Recruitment (25%) -

  • Actively recruit student athletes for the program and college
  • Coordinate visits and travel accommodations for recruit visits
  • Utilize, and keep current, the coach’s recruitment log as provided by the AD
  • Assist with compliance of housing requirements for recruits if applicable
  • Participate in Open House and other college recruitment activities as well as give campus tours on visits

Providing a nurturing a positive experience in and out of the classroom (25%) -

  • Collaborate with the Student Athlete Academic Support Liaison to encourage academic success of student athletes and assist in collection of progress reports and enforcement of mandated tutoring as appropriate
  • Arrange for 10 hours of community service with the team
  • Work collaboratively with the CCC ATC with injury reporting and return to play protocols
  • Coordinate with the AD and Residence Life Staff if residential students are required to have access to college housing, and how they will be fed, when college is not in session
  • Serve as a role-model and mentor to student athletes
  • Emphasize the importance of mental health and the specific issues that exist in intercollegiate athletics; check in on the mental health of the athletes and refer to resources as needed
  • Coordinate team building and bonding activities in and out of season
Fundraising and Miscellaneous (5%) -
  • Participate in Athletic Department fundraising events
  • Create and implement fundraising activities for the team if needed; as approved by AD and outlined in P&P Manual
  • Development of summer camps, prospect camps and/or clinics
  • Other related duties as assigned

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of sport being coached at a level commensurate with the level of collegiate competition
  • Demonstrated ability to lead a group of young people in a positive, collaborative, team-oriented culture
  • Ability to work with the public
  • Demonstrates commitment to accomplishing work in an ethical, efficient, and cost-effective manner
  • Ability to effectively convey information verbally and in writing, demonstrate effective listening skills, and display respect for and openness to other people’s ideas and thoughts
  • Ability to accept changes to job requirements, policies, workload, etc., as well as learn new methods, procedures, or techniques resulting from change with the ability to clearly approach problems and find solutions
  • Demonstrates support for the College’s goal of becoming a more diverse, inclusive, and culturally aware community and practicing anti-racist/biased behaviors

Minimum Qualifications

  • Associate’s Degree
  • Coaching or playing experience in the sport
  • Valid Driver’s License

Preferred Qualification:

  • Bachelor’s Degree or higher
  • One year coaching or two years’ experience in the sport at the collegiate level
  • Experience in recruiting student athletes
