Position Summary
Winston-Salem State University is seeking a dynamic and visionary Head Basketball Coach to lead the Rams into their next era of excellence!

Reporting to the Interim Director of Athletics, this leader will oversee all aspects of the basketball program, shaping a culture of success, integrity, and Ram Pride, on and off the field.

Duties & Responsibilities of the Head Coach of Men’s Basketball:
  • Preparation and conduct of all team-related activities including skill instruction, sport strategy, and competitive opportunities.
  • To provide an overall positive educational environment for our Student-Athletes conducive to learning, athletic development, social growth, and preparing them for life beyond college.
  • Use expert technical knowledge of Men’s Basketball to develop and coach a successful program, including the development of high-quality student-athletes, organizing and supervising practice, conditioning, and workouts, overseeing home events and managing travel for away events, supervising staff, and demonstrating athletic excellence.
  • Supervise, in conjunction with the athletic tutoring and advising program, the total academic progress of the team implementing corrective action plans through appropriate staff.
  • Selection, oversight, development, and retention of staff (assistants, graduate assistants, and managers).
  • Supervise the recruitment strategy to attract top-level prospects including identification, assessment, campus visits, and implementation of campus resources.
    • Monitor and maintain the discipline and conduct of student-athletes to support the image and reputation of the department and university.
    • Responsible for the development, safety, and conduct of the student-athletes within the Men’s Basketball program.
  • Perform team-related administrative duties such as budget, scheduling, travel arrangements, etc.
  • Establish a leadership/mentor role among student-athletes, assistant coaches, and other supportive staff while promoting sportsmanship and responsible behavior both during and outside of athletic competition.
  • Perform both direct and indirect public relations functions including promotion, fundraising, public speaking, community events, and through camps and/or clinics.
    • Assist with departmental needs as requested.
    • When practical under the circumstances, intercollegiate athletic staff is encouraged to voluntarily attend all athletic events to promote audience participation and support for WSSU team efforts.

Position required to work during periods of adverse weather or other emergencies

Normal Work Schedule
Monday-Friday 8:00 am – 5:00 pm
Nights and weekends vary during the season of competition.

Department Required Skills
  • Bachelor’s Degree in a relevant field
  • Minimum of five (5) years coaching experience and demonstrated successful coaching and recruiting experience in Basketball at the collegiate level or seven (7) years experience as a head coach at the high school level.

Preferred Years Experience, Skills, Training, Education
  • Master’s degree in a relevant field
  • Competitive coaching experience in Men’s Basketball at the university or college level.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of and adherence to NCAA rules and regulations.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate with and relate well to female student-athletes, high school/club coaches, and department support staff.
  • Demonstrated success in recruiting and retaining quality student-athletes, particularly at the regional (Southeast/Atlantic) level.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate through oral, written and electronic forms.
