The Head Carpenter / Workshop Foreman oversees daily operations of the wood workshop, managing a team of carpenters and helpers to ensure timely, high-quality production of furniture, cabinetry, and other wood products. This role combines strong technical carpentry skills with leadership, planning, and quality control responsibilities.
Key Responsibilities1. Production Management
- Plan and allocate daily tasks to carpenters based on project priorities and delivery schedules.
- Supervise fabrication, assembly, finishing, and installation of furniture and joinery items.
- Ensure materials, tools, and machinery are available and in proper working condition.
- Coordinate with designers, engineers, and project managers to clarify design and technical details.
2. Quality Control
- Inspect work at every stage to maintain quality, accuracy, and finish standards.
- Ensure correct joinery techniques, fitting accuracy, and finishing consistency.
- Monitor compliance with design drawings and specifications.
3. Team Leadership
- Train and guide carpenters, polishers, and helpers in technical skills and safe work practices.
- Motivate and maintain discipline, productivity, and teamwork within the workshop.
- Manage workforce attendance, performance, and task allocation.
4. Safety & Maintenance
- Enforce workshop safety protocols and housekeeping standards.
- Schedule preventive maintenance for machinery and tools.
- Report breakdowns, shortages, and risks promptly.
5. Coordination & Reporting
- Liaise with procurement and store teams to ensure timely material availability.
- Track progress, update daily production reports, and support project timelines.
- Provide feedback for process improvements and efficiency optimization.
Skills & Qualifications
Technical Skills:
- Expert in carpentry, joinery, and wood finishing processes.
- Strong knowledge of various wood types, plywood, veneers, laminates, and adhesives.
- Familiarity with modern machinery (CNC, edge banding, panel saws, etc.) and hand tools.
- Ability to read technical drawings and interpret design details.
Management Skills:
- Team leadership and manpower management.
- Strong problem-solving and decision-making ability.
- Time management and production planning.
Preferred Qualifications:
- ITI / Diploma in Carpentry, Wood Technology, or related field.
- Minimum 5–10 years of experience in furniture manufacturing or interior fit-out workshops, with at least 2 years in a supervisory role.
Work Environment
- Workshop-based role with occasional site visits for installation supervision.
- May involve extended hours depending on project deadlines.
