Head of Avionics Engineering

We are partnering with a pioneering company developing a full-stack solution for commercial-scale rocket propellant production on the Moon and Mars. They are creating one of the key enabling technologies that will allow humanity to become a multi-planet species.

They are seeking a Head of Avionics to take full ownership of avionics systems, move at a rapid pace, work hands-on with hardware, and tackle some of the most challenging technical problems in spaceflight.

In this role, you will lead the avionics team responsible for the design, analysis, and qualification of all avionics systems across every product line. This includes systems for motion control, communications, compute, power management, and more. You will serve as the technical authority and hold ultimate responsibility for the successful delivery and integration of all avionics hardware.

Responsibilities

  • Define and justify system architecture, interfaces, and requirements for all avionics systems.
  • Establish qualification testing criteria aligned with spaceflight standards.
  • Lead system and component-level design efforts, providing technical guidance and mentorship.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with software and mechanical teams to meet integration schedules and system milestones.
  • Manage all technical, operational, and programmatic risks for the avionics team.

Required Qualifications

  • B.S. in Electrical Engineering or a related technical field.
  • 5+ years of experience developing avionics systems for space applications.
  • Proficiency with Altium or equivalent EDA tools.
  • Familiarity with communication protocols, instrumentation/sensors, and power electronics.
  • Strong technical communication skills and the ability to thrive in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Advanced degree in Electrical Engineering or a related technical field.
  • 10+ years of experience developing avionics systems for space applications.
  • Demonstrated ownership of spaceflight hardware across the entire product lifecycle (design, analysis, qualification, and operation).
  • Deep understanding of radiation-induced failure modes and effects.
  • Experience conducting environmental test campaigns (thermal, shock, vibration, etc.).
