Head of Motor

We are partnering with a leading insurance provider to appoint an experienced Head of Motor to lead and develop their Motor Insurance business. This is a senior leadership role responsible for driving profitable growth, underwriting excellence, and operational performance across the motor portfolio.

The successful candidate will oversee Motor Underwriting, Claims, and Operations , shaping strategy while ensuring strong governance, market competitiveness, and high performance across teams.


Key Responsibilities

Strategy & Leadership

  • Develop and implement the Motor business strategy aligned with company objectives and regulatory requirements.
  • Lead and mentor underwriting and technical teams to deliver high performance and profitable growth .
  • Build a strong market intelligence framework to track industry trends, pricing, technology, and competitor activity.
  • Drive a performance-focused culture across branches and departments.


Underwriting & Portfolio Management

  • Establish and maintain underwriting guidelines, policies, SLAs, and authority limits .
  • Monitor portfolio growth, profitability, and loss ratios against budget.
  • Conduct risk assessment, referral handling, and quality assurance reviews .
  • Ensure tariffs, pricing, and renewal strategies remain competitive and profitable .
  • Maintain oversight of non-standard risks and underwriting decisions .


Claims & Operational Oversight

  • Work closely with the claims team to monitor loss ratios, claim severity, and large claims exposure .
  • Ensure effective procedures for claim notifications, repair assessments, settlements, and reinsurer interactions .
  • Maintain compliance with regulatory requirements and reinsurance treaty conditions .
  • Monitor claims exceeding treaty limits and coordinate approvals with reinsurers.


Stakeholder & Market Engagement

  • Maintain strong relationships with brokers, clients, and market partners .
  • Contribute to marketing strategies and business development initiatives .
  • Provide regular reporting to executive leadership on motor performance and corrective actions .


Candidate Profile

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree (preferably in Insurance or a related field)
  • MBA or postgraduate qualification preferred

Experience

  • Minimum 10 years’ experience in the insurance industry
  • At least 10 years managing teams within Motor Insurance
  • Strong exposure to motor underwriting, claims, and portfolio management

Skills

  • Deep knowledge of motor insurance products, vehicle types, and rating structures
  • Strong leadership, analytical, and decision-making abilities
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills
  • Commercial mindset with a results-driven approach
