Avalara is redefining the relationship between tax and technology by leading the next generation of agentic tax and compliance automation. As part of this transformation, our Corporate Communications team shapes the narratives that connect Avalara's strategy, innovations, and reputation across global audiences.
The Head of Strategic Communications is a senior individual contributor responsible for architecting and driving Avalara's most business-critical communications. You will shape Avalara's AI narrative, work with executives, enhance our industry reputation, develop analyst relationships, contribute to increased investor confidence, and manage real-time issues. It's a role for someone who excels in complexity, anticipates what's next, and can convert strategy into compelling and credible stories that move markets.
This is a US-based, remote position reporting to our Senior Director, Corporate Communications.

What Your Responsibilities Will Be:You will shape a cohesive narrative that advances our agentic AI positioning, long-term growth strategy, and overall market perception.
You will translate complex topics into compelling stories and oversee the end-to-end development of communication plans, major announcements, and executive content.
You will improve industry relations with accounting trade, managing analyst programs (IDC, Forrester, Aragon) in partnership with Product Marketing & Management.
You will support corporate milestone including M&A and financial communications, ensuring aligned messaging, partner readiness, and disciplined coordination with Investor Relations and Finance.
You will be a trusted counselor and rapid-response leader for sensitive or reputational matters.
You will use AI-enabled tools and data insights to enhance message development, speed of delivery, and effectiveness, while benchmarking Avalara's reputation.
You will collaborate across the entire organization and with global agency partners to ensure understanding, timing, and consistency across regions.
12–15+ years of communications experience in global, matrixed organizations, spanning strategic comms, executive comms, issues management, and external partner engagement.
Experience translating complex, technical, or regulated topics into compelling, human narratives.
A track record advising and influencing senior executives with confidence and clarity.
Experience leading industry relations, analyst relations, or reputation programs that shape external perception and lead shareholder value.
Experience with financial communications, M&A workflows, and sensitive or regulated disclosure expectations.
Crisis and issues management experience.
Excellent project management skills.
Global B2B SaaS and public company/technology industry experience required.
The pay range above is the general base pay range for a successful candidate in the state listed. The
successful candidate’s actual salary/wage may be based on various factors, such as geographic
location, candidate experience and qualifications, as well as market and business considerations.
This role is eligible for an annual bonus based on individual and company performance, depending on
the terms of the applicable plan and the employee’s role.
