JOB PURPOSE

The Head of Sustainability & Energy Management Section leads the University’s efforts in sustainability, energy, and water management. The role is responsible for planning and implementing energy efficiency programs, digital transformation solutions, and building management systems (BMS) to optimize utility consumption and achieve measurable ROI and energy savings across all facilities


MAIN ACCOUNTABILITIES & EXPECTATIONS

Strategic Planning and Governance
1. Establish, monitor, and implement the Section’s Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), operational procedures, and strategic plans.
2. Ensure full compliance with relevant environmental and energy regulations.
3. Provide regular progress reports and technical insights to the Director regarding sustainability milestones.
Energy and Water Efficiency Management
4. Lead campus-wide initiatives for sustainability, energy, and water efficiency.
5. Conduct in-depth analysis of consumption data to develop and implement effective saving strategies.
6. Manage the delivery of approved energy efficiency projects across University campuses.
Technical and Digital Oversight
7. Oversee the Building Management Systems (BMS) and digital energy platforms to ensure optimal performance.
8. Evaluate technical and financial proposals from Energy Service Companies (ESCOs) and vendors.
Resource Management
9. Manage the Section’s budgets, energy data, and technical consultants.
10. Coordinate daily with internal sections such as Operations and Maintenance and Projects Implementation to ensure departmental alignment.
Leadership and People Management
11. Supervise the effective achievement of the section’s objectives, set individual goals, supervise the team’s performance, keep them updated and informed, and support their development to achieve overall objectives.
12. Provide on-the-job training and constructive feedback to all subordinates to support their overall personal and professional development to prepare a workforce that drives UOS and achieves strategic objectives.
13. Develop the senior staff’s supervisory capabilities by assigning responsibilities, which would require managing the team members, assigning tasks, monitoring performance, providing guidance and on-the-job training, and reporting on status and results.
14. Organize and supervise activities and work of subordinates to ensure all work within the section is carried out efficiently and consistently and all job tasks are distributed between team members fairly and professionally.
15. Participate in the hiring process for the section, including identifying job requirements, sorting and reviewing candidate resumes, and contributing to the selection and interview process in order to ensure the best and most suitable candidates are selected for the available vacancies.
Decision-Making Authority
16. Authorized to approve methodologies and implementation plans within delegated authority.
17. Responsible for recommending major sustainability initiatives and strategic investments to the Director.
18. Directly responsible for section budgets, energy data, BMS platforms, and personnel management.
19. Complete any other job-related tasks as assigned by the line manager in the concerned college/department within the expected time limit.

REQUIRED SKILLS
Excellent oral and written communication skills and the ability to prepare technical documents, in both Arabic and English.
  • Excellent working knowledge of personal computer applications with an emphasis on MS Office applications such as Excel, Word, and Teams.
  • Proficiency in conducting level 1, 2, and 3 energy audits and using modeling software to predict savings and ROI.
  • Expert knowledge of Building Management Systems (BMS) and IoT platforms for real-time monitoring of HVAC, lighting, and power systems.
  • Ability to apply International Performance Measurement and Verification Protocol (IPMVP) standards to verify energy savings from ESCO projects.
  • Skill in using ERP systems and data visualization tools to interpret complex energy and water consumption trends.
  • Strong understanding of green building standards (LEED, Estidama/Pearl Rating) and UAE-specific environmental codes.
  • High-level ability to manage negotiations with Energy Service Companies (ESCOs) and consultants to ensure value-added results for the University.

DESIRABLE REQUIREMENTS

  • Minimum of a bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Environmental Engineering, or a relevant Engineering discipline.
  • A Master’s Degree in Sustainability Management or a relevant discipline would add an advantage.
  • Professional certifications as a Certified Energy Manager (CEM) and Project Management Professional (PMP) would add an advantage.
  • 12-14 years of UAE experience in a similar role, preferably in higher education institutions.
  • Priority to UAE Nationals.
