Health Care Assistant

The Health Care Assistant - Patient Aide provides essential non-clinical support in the daily care of hospitalized patients within the In-Patient Department. This role focuses on assisting patients with activities of daily living, ensuring their comfort, and maintaining a safe and clean environment. All tasks are performed under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse (RN) and in compliance with hospital policies and procedures. The position requires strong teamwork, compassion, and a commitment to patient well-being.

MAIN RESPONSIBILITES:

Patient Assistance and Care:

  • Patient Admission and Escorting: Escort patients from the reception area to their respective rooms, ensuring smooth admission processes. Assist patients in transitioning from the waiting area to various hospital locations (e.g., Pharmacy, Diagnostic areas, etc.).
  • Feeding and Comfort: Assist patients who are unable to feed themselves, providing nourishment as per dietary guidelines. Ensure patient comfort and emotional well-being during mealtimes.
  • Assistance with Activities of Daily Living (ADLs): Support patients with daily living tasks, such as bathing, dressing, grooming, toileting, mobilizing, and maintaining a comfortable and clean environment around their beds.
  • Personal Hygiene: Provide assistance with personal hygiene tasks for patients who are unable to do so independently, ensuring dignity and respect during the process.

Collaboration and Communication:

  • Effective Team Collaboration: Work closely with the nursing team, doctors, and other healthcare staff to ensure coordinated care delivery. Assist in transferring information about patients' status and needs as required.
  • Communication with Patients and Families: Ensure that patient and family concerns are communicated clearly to the Registered Nurse (RN) or relevant staff. Provide information and emotional support as needed.
  • Patient Advocacy: Be a voice for the patient’s concerns and ensure that their needs are met in a timely and efficient manner.

Patient Safety and Comfort:

  • Maintain a Safe Environment: Ensure a safe, clean, and comfortable environment for patients in the inpatient units. Regularly check for safety hazards and alert the Nurse In-Charge of any issues.
  • Monitoring and Reporting: Observe patients for any changes in their condition (e.g., vital signs, behavior) and report any abnormalities or concerns to the Registered Nurse immediately.
  • Emergency Response: Assist with emergency procedures by activating emergency codes as necessary and providing support during medical emergencies or transfers.
  • Patient Fall Prevention: Be alert to potential fall risks and assist patients in moving safely to prevent falls or injury.

Support to Nursing and Clinical Staff:

  • Assist with Clinical Tasks: Provide support to the nursing staff under their supervision in carrying out patient care, including assisting with wearing garments, positioning, and mobility. Aid in preparing patients for examinations and procedures.
  • Equipment and Resources: Ensure that necessary medical equipment, supplies, and patient documents are readily available and organized in patient rooms and clinical units.
  • Inventory Management: Assist in maintaining stock levels of consumables and other necessary supplies for patient care. Notify the nursing team when stock levels need replenishment.
  • Room Setup and Bed Making: Ensure patient rooms are properly set up, clean, and comfortable. Make beds and change linens regularly to maintain a hygienic environment.

Equipment & Supply Management

  • Ensure that hospital beds, wheelchairs, and other patient-use equipment are clean and properly functioning.
  • Restock medical and non-medical supplies in patient care areas (e.g., gloves, towels, hygiene products).
  • Safely transport specimens, documents, or equipment between departments as needed.

Infection Control & Hygiene

  • Follow strict infection prevention protocols, including proper hand hygiene and use of PPE.
  • Maintain cleanliness in patient rooms and common areas following hospital sanitation standards.
  • Assist in proper waste disposal and ensure medical waste is handled appropriately.

Equipment Cleaning (HCAs Must Take The Initiative Under Nurse Supervision)

  • Regularly clean medical equipment, water dispensers, trolleys, cabinets, and patient areas as required.
  • Ensure all patient supplies and care items are properly stored and organized.

Food Preparation & Meal Service:

  • Prepare and assemble patient meal trays according to dietary restrictions and guidelines.
  • Ensure timely delivery of meals to patient rooms or designated areas.
  • Reheat or portion food items as required before serving.
  • Assist in plating meals for staff and visitors in hospital dining areas.
  • Handle special dietary requests or modifications as instructed by the dietitian or nursing staff.

Pantry & Kitchen Maintenance:

  • Maintain cleanliness and organization of the hospital pantry, including shelves, refrigerators, and storage areas.
  • Restock food supplies, beverages, and utensils as needed.
  • Ensure all food items are stored properly and labeled according to hospital food safety standards.
  • Monitor inventory levels and report shortages to the kitchen supervisor.

Sanitation & Hygiene:

  • Clean and sanitize food service equipment, meal trays, and kitchen utensils.
  • Follow strict hygiene protocols, including proper handwashing, use of gloves, and handling of perishable items.
  • Dispose of food waste appropriately and maintain a clean work environment.

Quality and Safety Improvement:

  • Patient Safety Protocols: Ensure adherence to patient safety protocols and infection control guidelines. Report any safety hazards or incidents to the Nurse In-Charge immediately.
  • Support for Quality Initiatives: Participate in the hospital’s quality improvement programs and activities, including infection control, patient satisfaction surveys, and performance evaluations.
  • Housekeeping and Hygiene: Collaborate with the housekeeping team to maintain the cleanliness and hygiene of patient areas, including patient rooms, bathrooms, and common areas.

Patient Comfort and Emotional Support:

  • Emotional Support: Provide a comforting presence for patients by offering emotional support, reassurance, and empathy. Help patients feel cared for and valued.
  • Communication with Families: Ensure that families are kept informed of their loved one’s condition, ensuring a compassionate approach in any communication.
  • Assistance During Discharge: Assist patients during the discharge process by preparing their documents, ensuring that they have all required instructions, and escorting them to the exit or transportation area if needed.

Privacy and Confidentiality:

  • Protect Patient Privacy: Maintain strict confidentiality of patient records and medical information, following the hospital's privacy and data protection policies.
  • Respect for Dignity: Treat all patients with the utmost respect, ensuring that their dignity is upheld during care activities, especially when assisting with personal hygiene and dressing.

General Hospital Duties:

  • Messenger and Porter Services: Provide necessary porter and messenger services within the hospital, such as transporting patient records, samples, medications, and equipment between departments.
  • Support with Transporting Patients: Assist with the transfer of patients between units or departments, ensuring the patient is comfortable and well-supported.
  • Documentation Support: Assist with updating patient records and ensuring the correct documentation of care provided. Report any changes in the patient’s condition to the RN or doctor.

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Active Participation in Team Activities: Participate in departmental meetings and in-service training sessions to improve skills and knowledge related to patient care.
  • Assist with Admission and Discharge Processes: Support with the smooth process of patient admission and discharge, ensuring that patients and their families are informed and guided appropriately.
  • Perform Other Duties: Carry out any other duties or tasks as assigned by the Nurse In-Charge, Head of Unit, or healthcare team, related to patient care or hospital operations.
