Health Unit Coordinator

The Health Unit Coordinator supports the daily operations of the Emergency Department by performing clerical, communication, and coordination functions that promote efficient patient flow and high-quality care. This position serves as a central point of contact for staff, patients, families, and providers, while maintaining accurate records and supporting the nursing team. The HUC works under the direction of the Charge Nurse and/or ED leadership.

  • High school diploma or GED preferred.
  • Previous clerical, medical office, emergency department, or healthcare experience preferred.
  • Basic computer skills and experience with electronic health records preferred.
  • Strong communication, customer service, organizational, and multitasking skills.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with frequent interruptions.
  • Current BLS certification required.

Clerical and Reception Duties

1. Serve as the primary receptionist for the Emergency Department, greeting patients, families, providers, and visitors in a professional manner.

2. Answer and route telephone calls, monitor communication systems, and promptly relay messages to nursing staff and providers.

3. Maintain patient records, charts, logs, and electronic documentation in an accurate and timely manner.

4. Assist with admission, transfer, and discharge paperwork as assigned.

5. File, scan, copy, and organize records while maintaining confidentiality and compliance with HIPAA.

Communication and Coordination

6. Facilitate communication between nursing staff, physicians, laboratory, radiology, registration, and other departments.

7. Track patient flow, bed status, and department activity boards as directed.

8. Assist with order entry, transcription, and verification of orders within scope and per hospital policy.

9. Notify appropriate staff of STAT, critical, or time-sensitive information immediately.

10. Support the coordination of patient transport, transfers, and follow-up documentation.

Unit Support

11. Maintain a clean, organized, and efficient work area in the Emergency Department.

12. Assist with stocking supplies, monitoring inventory, and notifying leadership when items are low.

13. Support equipment, forms, and clerical supply organization for the unit.

14. Help ensure readiness of patient care areas by assisting with non-clinical setup and turnover tasks as assigned.

Safety and Professional Conduct

15. Follow all infection prevention, safety, and exposure control policies.

16. Maintain patient privacy, confidentiality, and security at all times.

17. Participate in required training, annual competencies, and department in-services.

18. Demonstrate professionalism, courtesy, and behavior consistent with Summit Medical Center standards.

19. Perform other duties as assigned to support Emergency Department operations.
