Position Purpose:
The Healthcare Data Analyst/Data Engineer supports research, evaluation, and clinical improvement initiatives by managing and analyzing clinical and operational data.
This role works closely with the hospital’s data analytics and IT teams to access, transform, and analyze data from Epic and enterprise data warehouses. The position is responsible for building analytic datasets, writing SQL queries, validating data, and supporting research projects focused on population and health services research.
Key Job Activities:
- Collaborates with hospital analytics and IT teams to access clinical and operational data from Epic and enterprise data systems.
- Writes and maintains SQL queries to extract, clean, and transform datasets for research and operational projects.
- Builds and maintains analytic datasets for population health, clinical intervention, and health service research initiatives.
- Performs data validation and quality assurance to ensure accuracy and completeness of datasets.
- Supports statistical analyses, dashboards, and reports for internal and external stakeholders.
- Works with research and program teams to translate research questions into data requests and analytic plans.
- Documents data definitions, extraction logic, and analytic workflows.
- Assists with integration of data across multiple systems and sources.
- Supports development of data visualizations and summary reports.
- Participates in team meetings and project planning related to data and evaluation.
- Performs other duties as assigned. Education and Work Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in data science, statistics, computer science, informatics, or a related field.
- Minimum of 3–5 years of experience working with healthcare, clinical, or related data.
- Experience working with Epic data or healthcare enterprise data warehouses.
- Demonstrated experience writing moderate to complex SQL queries.
- Experience supporting research, quality improvement, or operational analytics projects preferred.
Knowledge and Skills:
- Strong SQL and relational database skills (e.g., SQL Server, Oracle, or similar systems).
- Knowledge of healthcare data structures such as encounters, diagnoses, procedures, labs, and medications.
- Experience with data cleaning, validation, and dataset construction.
- Ability to translate research or operational questions into structured data queries.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and critical thinking skills.
- Experience with data visualization or analytic tools (e.g., Power BI, Tableau, R, Python) preferred.
- Experience with statistical software (e.g., SAS, Stata, R)
- Strong documentation and data management practices.
- Ability to communicate technical concepts to non-technical audiences.
- Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
- Epic certification or proficiency in reporting or analytics modules (e.g., Clarity, Caboodle, Cogito).
- Experience with Epic reporting environments (e.g., Clarity, Caboodle, Cogito) preferred.
- Experience in EPIC and MEDITECH software systems preferred.
- Certifications/Licenses:
- Epic certification or proficiency in reporting or analytics modules (e.g., Clarity, Caboodle, Cogito) preferred.
