Summary: Under direction, drives a truck with tandem/dual rear axles, to transport materials, equipment or people. Performs related duties, as required, consistent with municipal water and sewer activities. Work is performed under general direction from the Operations Supervisor or his designee who assigns duties and reviews performance for completeness, conformance to instructions and regulations.
Duties: Drives trucks with tandem/dual rear axles to pick up, haul, load and deliver various materials and equipment. Maintains cleanliness and performs repairs and maintenance at the sanitary sewer pump station. Supplies trucks with gas, oil, and water; keeps garage clean and in order; maintains records of receipts, deliveries, fuel consumption, and mileage traveled. Checks, cleans, greases, washes, and performs the required adjustments to trucks and other auxiliary equipment. Cleans areas affected by sanitary sewage back-ups, which would include homeowners’ residences. Excavates and backfills trenches; assists in the laying of new sanitary sewer pipes; performs digging and heavy lifting work as needed. Sanitary sewer manhole reconstruction, including repairs and inspection. Operates flusher truck proficiently, which includes cleaning and removing backups in sanitary lines; operates sanitary sewer cleaning and flushing machines and assists in the laying of new sanitary sewer pipes. Digs holes and goes into confined spaces upon completing a training program. Operates drills, jack hammers, electric saws and other power equipment as required. Participates in emergency stand-by. May assist in maintenance of station records and logs and other Department of Utilities activities, as they may be assigned. May inspect truck prior to operating for proper amounts of fuel, oil, water, and to check tires, lights and brakes; may make minor emergency repairs to trucks such as changing tires or installing light bulbs, fuses, and tire chains. Utilizes safety equipment and follows safety procedures to ensure protection of personnel, equipment, and the general public during maintenance operations. When not engaged in driving a truck or other vehicles, may perform other work such as building maintenance and repair work, laboring, or other unskilled work.
Requirements: High School graduate or equivalent. One (1) year of experience in driving a truck with tandem/dual rear axles and auxiliary equipment. Masonry, water and sewer construction experience preferred. Must be physically able to dig trenches; must pass confined space and safety training; must be able to lift heavy loads of at least seventy-five (75) pounds and must be able to work in various kinds of weather. Must have a valid New Jersey Driver’s License and must possess a valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL), Class B with Air Brake Endorsement. Position requires off hours availability to work nights and weekends as situations warrant.
Salary: $20.38 per hour; includes health benefits, PTO and state pension membership.
