Position Summary
Southern Road & Bridge is seeking a highly motivated and experienced Traveling Heavy Equipment Field Mechanic to support our growing fleet throughout the Southeastern United States. This position is responsible for diagnosing, repairing, inspecting, and maintaining construction equipment.
The ideal candidate is self-sufficient, mechanically skilled, safety-focused, and comfortable traveling extensively to customer job sites, branch locations, and vendor facilities. A CDL is strongly preferred to assist with equipment transportation and emergency fleet support.
Key Responsibilities
Equipment Maintenance & Repair
- Diagnose and repair mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, diesel engine, and operational issues on rental equipment.
- Perform preventative maintenance and scheduled service on fleet assets.
- Complete inspections, repairs, and service documentation using company systems and mobile applications.
- Conduct inspections and quality checks before equipment is delivered to Job sites.
- Troubleshoot equipment failures in the field and provide emergency repair support.
- Coordinate with vendors and manufacturers when additional technical support is required.
Field Service Operations
- Travel throughout the Southeast region to job sites and company locations.
- Respond to service calls with urgency and professionalism.
- Communicate repair status and estimated completion times to management and customers.
- Maintain company tools, service truck inventory, and parts stock.
Transportation & Logistics
- Transport equipment between branches, job sites, vendors, and job site locations.
- Secure equipment in compliance with DOT regulations and company standards.
- Assist with fleet relocations, deliveries, and pickups as business needs require.
- Perform pre-trip and post-trip vehicle inspections.
Customer Service
- Represent the Southern Road & Bridge professionally at all customer locations.
- Build strong relationships with customers through responsive service and communication.
- Identify opportunities to improve fleet reliability and customer satisfaction.
Safety & Compliance
- Follow all OSHA, DOT, FMCSA, and company safety policies.
- Maintain accurate service records, inspection reports, and work orders.
- Ensure all work is completed safely and in accordance with manufacturer specifications.
Qualifications
Required
- 3+ years of heavy equipment maintenance and repair experience.
- Strong understanding of hydraulic, electrical, diesel engine, and mechanical systems.
- Ability to diagnose equipment issues independently.
- Valid driver's license with clean driving record.
- Ability to travel extensively throughout the Southeast region and beyond.
- Ability to lift 75 lbs and work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
- Strong communication and customer service skills.
- Self-Driven and capable of problem solving
Preferred
- CDL Class A license.
- Experience transporting construction equipment.
- DOT medical card.
- Experience with telematics and fleet management systems.
- OEM certifications from manufacturers such as JLG Industries, Skyjack, Genie, Caterpillar, or John Deere.
Travel Requirements
- Up to 85% travel throughout the Southeastern United States.
- Overnight travel required.
- Flexible schedule to support emergency customer service needs.
Physical Requirements
- Lift, carry, push, and pull up to 75 pounds.
- Climb ladders and access elevated equipment.
- Work in outdoor environments, construction sites, and shop settings.
- Stand, kneel, bend, and work in confined spaces for extended periods.

Compensation
· Hourly Driving $28/hr
· Hourly Mechanical - $35/hr
