Job Description and Duties

Under the direct supervision of the Equipment Maintenance Supervisor, the Heavy Equipment Mechanic performs and maintains a preventive maintenance program on the automotive equipment, vehicles and equipment. Heavy Equipment Mechanic to perform, supervise, coordinate, and assist with work in connection with; major repairs to vehicles and equipment. To include major engine overhauls, tune-ups, relining and adjusting of brakes, wheel aligning, transmission and differential replacement and repair, and minor body repair. Inspects automotive equipment to determine the necessary corrective action. Operates and maintains automotive shop equipment; advises in the selection and storage of automotive parts, tools and equipment; estimates the cost of automotive repairs; instructs operators in the proper operation and servicing of their equipment; does minor welding and brazing work; keeps simple records and makes reports. Maintain order and supervise the conduct of incarcerated persons assigned to the Garage. Supervise and instruct them in their work and submit periodic written appraisals of their conduct and productivity; prevent escapes and injury by them to themselves or others or to property; maintain security of working area and work materials; inspect premises and search incarcerated persons for contraband. Inform supervisors of any issues or problems that may arise in the operation of the Garage. A desirable qualification would be possession of a valid California Commercial Drivers License (Class B) with passenger and tank endorsement. See attached Duty Statement.

Eligibility Information

To obtain list eligibility for Heavy Equipment Mechanic, CF, before applying for the position, you must first take and pass the examination here.

Minimum Qualifications

Possession of a valid Class 3 driver license. (Applicants who do not possess the license will be allowed to compete in the examination, but the license must be obtained prior to appointment.) AND

Either I Completion of a recognized apprenticeship as a gas and diesel-powered truck mechanic, or a heavy construction equipment mechanic. (Apprentices who are within six months of completing their apprenticeship program may be admitted to the examination, but they must present evidence of completion of a recognized apprenticeship before they may be appointed.)

Or 2: Four years of varied mechanical experience on gas and diesel-powered trucks or heavy construction equipment. An Associate of Arts Degree in Heavy Equipment Maintenance, Diesel Mechanics, or Heavy Equipment Mechanics, or a certificate of completion from an accredited Community college or equivalent degree or certificate approved by the Bureau for Private Postsecondary and Vocational Education under the provisions of California Education Code Division 10, Part 59, Chapter 3, may be substituted for two years of the required experience. (Students who are within six months of completing their degree will be admitted to the examination but must present evidence of completion prior to appointment.)

Or 3: Three years performing the duties of a Heavy Equipment Mechanic Apprentice in the California state service, at least two years of which shall have included experience on gasoline and diesel-powered heavy construction or highway maintenance equipment.
