General Summary
A Heavy Equipment Operator operates a variety of equipment including; tractor, scraper, motor grader, backhoe, excavator, frontend loader, side boom, semi-tractor with trailer, etc.
Essential Job Functions
While not all inclusive, the following is a list of tasks to be performed and/or coordinated:
1. Posses and maintain all licenses and certifications required to operate the heavy equipment
2. Perform inspection prior to operating equipment to ensure safe operating condition including checking all fluids, tires, lights, signals, etc. as listed on inspection form
3. Fully understand the piece of equipment
4. Consistent, reliable and punctual attendance
5. Follow and/or complete the Detailed Daily Work Plan and ensure crew actively participates, knows and follows each procedure
6. Identify and mitigate hazards on job location to ensure incident free operation
7. Participate in job site safety audits and report near hits and all safety concerns to supervision
8. Ensure all required documents for job task are available, accurate and complete such as USA Dig Alert, OSHA Notification, Customer Permits, etc.
9. Perform tasks assigned by Crew Lead or Supervisor
10. Operate equipment in a safe and efficient manner
11. Perform various tasks such as setting and removing shoring boxes, loading and moving soil/material, digging and back filling various types of ditches and trenches
12. Shoot elevations with eye level and/or laser level
13. Test job site for atmospheric hazards with monitor
14. Perform monthly self audit of to ensure compliance
15. Develop knowledge of applicable KSI's Standard Operating Procedures
16. Follow all KSI and Customer Policies and Procedures
17. Perform all physical and mental requirements listed
Education and Experience
· Preferably 1-2 years of industry experience
· In depth knowledge of heavy equipment being operated
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
· Ability to communicate with employees, vendors, sub-contractors and customers in a professional and courteous manner
· Ability to follow written and verbal instructions
· Ability to read and write in English
· Ability to load heavy equipment onto tractor-trailer and bind and secure for safe travel
· Ability to interpret load charts
· Ability to operate various types of equipment controls (Case, John Deer, Cat etc.)
Pre-Employment Requirements
All candidates must pass a pre employment physical examination, drug / alcohol screen, hold a valid driver’s license, pass a motor vehicle record check and be insurable through KSI’s insurance carrier, criminal background check and E-verify as a condition of successful consideration for employment.
Physical Requirements
Must be able to lift 50 lbs. and work in harsh weather for long periods of time. Depending on the phase of the job, all personnel are required to work in conditions where physical demands can consist of placing one’s body in various positions to inspect and to accomplish certain tasks such as:
· Sitting
· Standing
· Squatting
· Raising and Lowering objects from one level to another
· Carrying objects, usually holding it in the hands or arms, or on the shoulder
· Grasping objects with the use of fingers, palm and wrists to hold/and or manipulate objects (hammers, saws, pencils, pens etc,)
· Pulling ie. Exerting force upon an object so that the object moves toward the force (includes jerking)
· Pushing ie. Exerting force upon an object so that the object moves away from the force (includes slapping, striking, kicking and treadle actions)
· Bending at the waist, stooping, working in a supine position, twisting seated or standing
Some of these physical requirements will range from seldom, frequent to constant depending on the task.
Working Hours: Normally, a full-time employee will work 40 hours per week, depending on the factors such as weather and schedules. Work schedules and hours may vary depending on specific client locations and projects. In general, applicable work schedules include 5-8’s and 4-10’s. All labor laws in reference to rest breaks and meal periods will be followed.
Job Type: Full-time
Pay: $23.45 - $33.00 per hour
