Heavy Equipment Operator

GFL Environmental is one of North America’s leading waste management companies, proudly making communities cleaner, safer, and happier through first-class service. Working for GFL is more than a job — it’s an opportunity to grow in your career, make new friends, and make a difference each day.

Our employees are affectionately known as Team Green, a name that unites us all under our shared purpose of providing sustainable solutions to enable our customers and communities to be GREEN FOR LIFE!

The Opportunity

Are you at home behind the controls of heavy iron? Do you take pride in managing the "working face" of a landfill and keeping the site running smooth? We are looking for a Landfill Equipment Operator who is dependable, safety-conscious, and ready to help us manage our most critical infrastructure. If you want a stable, long-term role with a company that actually invests in its people, this is your next move.

Your Day-to-Day

  • Master the Machinery: Operate heavy equipment—including compactors, dozers, scrapers, and loaders—to spread, compact, and cover waste according to site plans.

  • The Daily Checklist: You are the first line of defense for your machine. You’ll perform daily inspections, grease/lubricate equipment, and manage fluid levels to keep our fleet in top shape.

  • Maintain the Site: Clean trash and debris from tracks and gear mechanisms daily. You’ll also assist in maintaining the grounds and facility appearance to GFL’s high standards.

  • Communication & Safety: Use a two-way radio to stay in sync with the scale house and field crew. You’ll attend regular safety meetings to ensure everyone on Team Green goes home safe.

  • Team Versatility: Be ready to substitute for other operators or jump in on special projects as needed/required by management.

What You Bring to Team Green

  • The Skills: Proven ability to steer, guide, and drive heavy equipment using steering wheels, shifters, levers, and pedals. Forklift certification is required.

  • The Knowledge: Ability to read and understand equipment gauges, perform basic math, and follow instructions with limited supervision.

  • Certification Ready: Willingness to obtain a Landfill Operations Certification—we’ll provide the path to get you there!

  • The Grit: Comfortable working 100% outdoors in all weather conditions. You can lift/push/pull up to 25 lbs regularly and 50 lbs occasionally.

  • Language: Ability to read, speak, and write in English to ensure site safety and clear communication.

Why Work for GFL?

At GFL, our goal is to invest in our people and provide opportunities to grow for life! We offer a heavy-duty benefits package:

  • Time for You: 15 days of Paid Time Off (PTO) plus Paid Holidays.

  • Health & Wellness: 4 Medical plan options, including an HSA with an employer contribution & match program.

  • Full Coverage: Comprehensive Medical, Dental, and Vision insurance.

  • Future Planning: 401(k) with a competitive employer match.

  • Support System: Employee Assistance Program (EAP) with free counseling services.
