The County of Santa Barbara Public Works Department is currently accepting applications for Extra-Help Heavy Truck Driver in Santa Barbara.Civil Service Rule (CSR) 905 Extra-Help Appointments: An extra-help appointment is defined as an appointment made to a non-regular, non-permanent position established on a temporary basis to meet peak loads, unusual work situations, seasonal and recurrent work, intermittent assignments, or emergencies.Benefits will be offered once extra-help employees reach Affordable Care Act (ACA) eligibility.THE POSITION: Under general direction, drives diesel tractor-trailer combinations of four or more axles in transporting refuse and recyclable material; performs skilled work in the operation of loaders and other power equipment at refuse transfer stations and landfills; and performs related duties as required.The IDEAL CANDIDATE will have: Ability to operate a manual transmission semi-truck trailerFlexibility, a positive attitude, and an impeccable characterExcellent oral and written communication skills and the ability to interact with all levels of internal and external customersAbility to prepare and write clear and concise daily work reports which will be turned in at the end of the work dayAbility to work well independently and as a team playerAbility to be open to change and new information, and adapt behavior and work methods in response to new information, changing conditions, and unexpected obstaclesThe ability to exercise appropriate judgment in answering questions and releasing information; analyzing and projecting consequences of decisions and/or recommendationsTwo (2) or more years of experience driving semi-truck, tractor with a 48 foot or larger trailerWheel loader experience which includes loading different size trailersDemonstrated ability in using a weighing system to load various payload sizesComputer savvyThe Public Works Department: The employees of the Santa Barbara County's Public Works Department are committed to efficiently providing, operating and maintaining public works infrastructure, facilities and services to make everyday life as safe and convenient as possible for the public we serve. EXAMPLE OF DUTIES
Operates a diesel tractor-trailer combination of four or more axles in transporting refuse and recyclable material; maintains operator log; and computes axle weights to ensure that load is within legal limits.Operates loaders for compacting and loading of refuse and recyclable materials into trucks for transfer to other sites; and operates other equipment including dump trucks, water trucks, bobcats, and forklifts.Performs minor repairs and servicing of equipment.
