POSITION SUMMARY:

The Homeschool P.E. Instructor will lead physical education sessions for homeschooled children in Kindergarten through 6th grade. The instructor will guide students through an hour of free swim and deliver an hour of structured, curriculum-based P.E. in the gym. This role is ideal for someone who enjoys working with children, has a passion for fitness and aquatic safety, and can create a positive, inclusive environment where kids develop physical skills, confidence, and a love for activity.

CORE FUNCTIONS:

  • Lead a 1-hour free swim session, supervising children in the pool, ensuring safety, enforcing pool rules, and facilitating water play and basic aquatic skill development as appropriate for various ages and swim abilities.
  • Ability to plan, prepare, and deliver curriculum-based physical education lessons in the gym that align with developmental stages (K through grade 6).
  • Ability to create lesson plans that incorporate a variety of activities (e.g. locomotor skills, balance, coordination, throwing/catching, fitness games, cooperative games, relay races, obstacle courses, flexibility, strength, endurance) adapted for mixed-age groups.
  • Provide feedback and encouragement to students, promoting good sportsmanship, effort, cooperation, and positive behavior.
  • Communicate as needed with supervisor and/or parents/guardians about student progress, behavior, or safety concerns.
  • Ensure all equipment is used safely and properly, assist with gym and pool set-up and clean-up as needed, and report maintenance or safety issues to facility management.
  • Enforce safety rules and emergency procedures in both the pool and gym settings, including supervising children at all times, performing safety checks, and being prepared to act in emergency water or injury situations.
  • Collaborate with other instructors, facility staff, and administration to ensure smooth scheduling, safe transitions from pool to gym, and high participant satisfaction.
  • Follows all Y policies, rules, regulations and procedures, including emergency and safety procedures. Completes incident and accident reports as necessary.
  • Other duties may be assigned.
Requirements:

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

There are no supervisory responsibilities.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

There are no education requirements. Experience working with school-aged children (K-6) in physical activity, sports, or instructional roles is preferred.

REASONING ABILITY:

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or scheduled form.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Work takes place in both gym and pool settings; exposure to wet and humid areas, chlorine, etc. Must be able to lift, move, and set up light equipment (cones, balls, mats, etc.).

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:

Ability to add and subtract two-digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10’s and 100’s. Ability to perform these operations using units of American money and weight measurement, volume and distance.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Frequently required to talk or hear. Must be able to conduct classes and activities. Ability to perform physical aspects of position; including leading class, walking, standing, bending, reaching, and lifting.

LANGUAGE SKILLS:

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of members or employees of the organization.

Current CPR and First Aid; required for hire and must maintain certification.

New Employee Orientation; required before starting work, provided by the Y.
