Household Assistant

Schedule: Monday-Thursday afternoons, typically between 3:00-7:00 PM during the school year; varies during summer
Hours: About 15 hours/week during the school year. Summer hours are lighter.
Location: Matthews / Indian Trail / Monroe, NC
Start: ASAP, with summer hours now and the full schedule starting in late August

Local applicants only, please. All pickups, drop-offs, and errands are within a few miles, so a long commute does not work well for this role.

About the Role

We are an active family with three kids, ages 7, 12, and 14, looking for a reliable, self-motivated Family Assistant to help our afternoons run smoothly.

The core hours are centered around school pickup and transportation to after-school sports, but that is not all the role entails. Daily, weekly, and monthly household tasks are expected to be completed between pickups, drop-offs, and activities.

A parent works from home and is present. This is not a babysitting position. The role is focused on managing the afternoon routine, helping with local transportation, and keeping the home organized.

We are looking for someone who can look at the day’s schedule, understand what needs to happen, and use good judgment around timing. Some days may require arriving earlier to get ahead of household tasks or staying a little later to make sure pickup, practices, meals, laundry, and other household needs are handled. The goal is not to fill a set block of time, but to make sure the afternoon runs smoothly and the household is left in a good place.

Key Responsibilities

• Managing schedules, meal planning, and appointments
• School pickup and transportation to after-school sports and activities
• Coordinating timing between school dismissal and activities
• Laundry: washing, folding, and putting away
• Light housekeeping: dishes, wiping surfaces, tidying shared spaces
• Household organizing projects as needed
• Simple meal prep: packing lunches or preparing light dinners and snacks
• Occasional errands (groceries, dry cleaning, etc.)

What a Good Day Looks Like

You arrive on time, check the schedule, start laundry, load or unload the dishwasher, gather any sports bags, meals, or supplies, and head to pickup. The kids are dropped off at practice or activities on time.

While they are there, you use the time productively by switching or folding laundry, wiping down the kitchen, tidying shared spaces, or handling other household tasks.

After practice, the kids are picked up and brought home. Before you leave, the kitchen is clean, laundry is handled and you have confirmed the next day’s schedule with the older girls in case anything has changed.

On lighter driving days or during longer gaps, you take initiative with small household projects, such as organizing the pantry, taking out recycling, checking household supplies, or tackling another area that needs attention.

What We’re Looking For

• Proactive and self-directed. You see what needs doing and handle it without being asked.
• Dependable and punctual. Sports start at specific times, so reliability matters.
• Good judgment with time. You can look at the family schedule and household needs, then plan your arrival and departure time accordingly so the kids get where they need to be and household tasks are handled.
• Flexible. Family schedules shift, and we need someone who can roll with it.
• Comfortable around school-aged children.
• Valid driver’s license, clean driving record, and reliable vehicle.

The driving is important, but the household work in between is just as much a part of the role. We have found that being upfront about this makes everything work better for both sides.
