HPC Operations Manager

ASRC Federal InuTeq proudly partners with NASA’s High-Performance Computing Services program at Ames Research Center, home to some of the most powerful supercomputers on Earth. Our teams operate four on-site supercomputing systems comprising approximately 17,000 nodes and delivering more than 25 petaflops of performance—enabling groundbreaking research for NASA and its federal partners.
We are seeking a Senior HPC Operations Manager to lead operations for the NASA Advanced Supercomputing (NAS) Division. This role blends people leadership, operational accountability, and technical oversight of large-scale HPC environments, while maintaining close collaboration with NASA stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities
Administrative & People Management
  • Lead and manage a multidisciplinary HPC operations team supporting a 24×7 production environment
  • Establish and reinforce a mission-driven culture emphasizing reliability, accountability, and continuous improvement
  • Plan and oversee execution of operational initiatives and improvement efforts
  • Coordinate staffing coverage to ensure continuous operational support
  • Ensure contractual deliverables are executed according to program objectives and timelines HPC Technical & Operational Management.
HPC Technical & Operational Management
  • Direct day-to-day operational execution for large-scale, production HPC systems
  • Set operational priorities to ensure system availability, stability, and performance
  • Lead operational coordination during system events, outages, and recovery activities
  • Balance operational risk, performance, and mission needs in coordination with NASA stakeholders
Cluster Management Software & Systems Oversight
  • Provide strategic oversight for cluster management platforms, schedulers, monitoring tools, and automation frameworks
  • Define standards and operational practices for system configuration and lifecycle activities
  • Identify opportunities to improve efficiency, reliability, and usability across HPC operations
  • Ensure consistent operational practices across software stacks and system management processes
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, Engineering, or a related technical field
  • 5+ years of experience in government contracting with direct responsibility for:
  • Managing large technical teams (20+ staff) in 24×7 operational environments
  • Serving as a primary customer interface and delivering contractual requirements
  • 7+ years of experience supporting High-Performance Computing environments, including ownership of:
  • Large-scale, production HPC systems comprising thousands of nodes
  • Operational decision-making, incident response, and outage management
  • Proven experience maintaining Authority to Operate (ATO) for mission-critical systems, including audit preparation and compliance activities
  • Demonstrated accountability for HPC operational metrics using monitoring and ticketing systems to improve reliability and performance
  • Hands-on experience with HPC cluster management software, including system configuration, upgrades, and lifecycle management
  • Strong project management experience delivering complex initiatives on time and within budget
  • Experience working with vendors to evaluate technologies and support procurement decisions
  • Excellent people leadership skills, including hiring, coaching, performance management, and team development
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including responsibility for technical documentation and customer-facing deliverables
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills with the ability to prioritize competing operational and mission needs
Preferred:
  • Project Management Professional Certification
  • A minimum of 10 years as a government contractor

This position is offering a pay range of $180,000.00– $205,000.00 depending on experience, seniority, geographic locations, and other factors permitted by law.
