Overview

The Connecticut Emerging Infections Program (EIP) is a collaborative effort between the Yale School of Public Health and the Connecticut Department of Public Health (CTDPH), funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Along with five other EIP sites, the Connecticut HPV-IMPACT team conducts surveillance for High-Grade Cervical Lesions (HGCL) and invasive cervical cancer. The Surveillance Officer will work under the Project Manager to provide high level, independent support to the HPV-IMPACT Program to ensure that all timelines and deliverables are met. They will participate in daily activities including but not limited to: disease investigation, data management, and training of student research assistants. They will coordinate pathology laboratory, and clinical partners. They will work with state (CT DPH) and federal (CDC) partners to discuss project procedures, implementation and standardization of data collection, data entry and analyses. They will be responsible for updating the REDCap database, geocoding, analyzing and presenting HPV-IMPACT findings.

  • Works collaboratively with CDC and CTDPH staff as well as staff at the 4 other EIP/HPV-IMPACT sites to update protocols, procedures, study design, analysis and adherence by providing meaningful input. This will require periodic travel to Hartford CT, Atlanta GA, and possibly EIP sites in other states.

  • Collaborates with the HPV-IMPACT Program Manager to meet project goals, timelines and deliverables. Implements and updates local surveillance protocols for HPV-IMPACT to ensure project continuity.

  • Contributes to case finding, case auditing, geocoding and data collection initiatives for HPV-IMPACT. Responsible for data entry in multiple project databases and monitors data quality.

  • Ensures that medical chart abstractions are completed on all identified cases. This requires strong knowledge of medical terminology and experience conducting medical chart reviews. In addition, this requires establishing and maintaining collaborations with health care providers and staff contacts for electronic medical records (EMR) at each institution or medical practice.

  • Reviews and extracts pertinent vaccine data from the state immunization registry (CTWiz).

  • Assists with data management, data cleaning and analyzing data using statistical programs, such as R, and SAS.

  • Supervises student employees (including bachelor’s and master’s level students) and monitors progress and quality of work. Trains students in project procedures and operations.

  • Design and distribute surveys to healthcare provider and laboratory partners to improve surveillance.

  • Coordinates with pathology laboratories to collect blocks of tissue containing cervical lesions for typing. Coordinates with pathology/histology partners at Yale to have tissue prepared for slide review and typing at CDC.

  • Develops abstracts and posters summarizing HPV-IMPACT findings for professional meetings and manuscripts for submission to professional journals.

  • Presents HPV-IMPACT findings to community groups, public health professionals, university groups and colleagues at professional meetings and conferences.

  • Prepare reports for funding agencies including CT DPH and CDC to document HPV-IMPACT progress, successes and challenges.


Required Skills and Abilities


1. Proven ability to work with research protocols and clinical trials; adept at collecting and managing data. Demonstrated ability with SAS, R, or other compatible software.
2. Strong interpersonal skills, excellent written and verbal communication abilities, and experience working with diverse groups or patient populations.
3. Intermediate to advanced proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word), electronic medical databases, and other relevant software.
4. Excellent organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities efficiently in a fast-paced environment.
5. Strong customer service orientation, with the ability to handle sensitive information confidentially and professionally.

Preferred Skills and Abilities

1. Bachelor's degree in a related field such as psychology, neuroscience, or public health; experience administering structured clinical interviews or managing research studies.
2. Familiarity with research regulations, ethical guidelines, and Institutional Review Board (IRB) procedures.
3. Proven experience with data management software, such as REDCap, OnCore, and clinical trial management systems (CTMS).
4. Prior experience in a clinical setting, working with subjects with psychiatric or cognitive disorders.
5. Completion of Good Clinical Practice (GCP) training, with certification as a Clinical Research Associate (CRA) or Clinical Research Professional (CRP) preferred.

Principal Responsibilities

1. Researches and collects data through site or home visit intakes; library research; structured interviews; or through other means for research projects. 2. Interprets, synthesizes, and analyzes data using scientific or statistical techniques. Modifies and plans research experiments, procedures, tests, or survey instruments. Assists in research design. 3. Writes and edits material for publication and presentation. Reports on status of research activities. Oversees and instructs research and support staff on technical procedures, equipment operation, and laboratory maintenance. 4. Schedules and coordinates research activities. Identifies and recruits study participants. Orders and maintains inventory of supplies. 5. May assist in preparing financial information and monitoring budgets. 6. Performs additional functions incidental to research activities. Required Education and Experience Two years of related work experience in the same job family and a Bachelor's degree in a related field; or an equivalent combination of experience and education.
