Purpose of Human Resource Generalist Role:

The HR Generalist carries out responsibilities in the following functional areas: benefits administration, recruitment/employment, employee relations, training, performance management, onboarding, policy development and implementation, succession planning, compensation review and employment law compliance.

The HR Generalist also provides administrative support to the Human Resourced Director.

Primary Responsibilities:

Benefits Administration:

  • Assists with conducting annual open enrollment for benefit programs, employee orientation, addressing employee inquiries, and ensuring compliance with HIPAA, COBRA and WC regulations. Transmits employee completed enrollment forms to third party benefits administrator.
  • Processes new employee enrollment and other benefit changes. Audits all benefit related invoices to ensure accuracy. Resolves any problems.
  • Enters accurate benefit premium deductions into the QuickBooks and associated HR system.
  • Reconciles monthly insurance billing for medical, dental, vision, life, and ancillary insurance plans. Gathers, assembles, posts, balances and summarizes accounting data; receipts and deposits monies as assigned.
  • Serves as contact for plan vendors and third-party administrators. Investigates discrepancies, resolves issues and provides information to appropriate parties.
  • Maintains employee benefit files, active and inactive.
  • Processes employee leave-of-absence requests. Tracks payments made to continue benefit coverage while on leave.
  • Processes benefits for terminated employees. Ensure that COBRA information is explained and benefit options understood.
  • Manages, distributes, and/or updates insurance packets, handouts and brochures as appropriate.
  • Ensure that all employees that incur a work-related injury follow the Workers' Compensation procedures and policies by filling out the first report of injury document. Manages Workers Compensation return to work and work restrictions. Logs all work-related injuries on the OSHA 300 log. Ensures that the OSHA 300 log is reported annually to OSHA. Monitor injured employees and attempt to return them to full duty as efficiently as possible.

Human Resources

  • Reviews, tracks, and documents compliance with mandatory and non-mandatory training, continuing education, and work assessments. This may include safety training, anti-harassment training, and professional licensure.
  • Recruits, interviews, and facilitates the hiring of qualified job applicants for open positions; collaborates with department managers to understand skills and competencies required for openings.
  • Conducts or acquires background checks and employee eligibility verifications.
  • Implements new hire orientation and assists with employee recognition programs.
  • Performs routine tasks required to administer and execute human resource programs including but limited to compensation, benefits, and leave; disciplinary matters; disputes and investigations; performance and talent management; productivity, recognition, and morale; occupational health and safety; and training and development.
  • Handles employment-related inquiries from applicants, employees, and supervisors, referring complex and sensitive matters to the Director of Human Resources.
  • Attends and participates in employee disciplinary meetings, terminations, and investigations.
  • Maintains compliance with federal, state and local employment laws and regulations, and recommends best practices; reviews policies and practices to maintain compliance.
  • Maintains knowledge of trends, best practices, regulatory changes, and new technologies in human resources, talent management, and employment law.

Working Conditions, Environment and Physical Requirements:

  • Functions performed in a variety of environments including: NDI New Mexico offices, schools, residency sites, and other locations
  • Requires reliable transportation and reimbursable in-state travel to NDI New Mexico locations, participating schools, residency sites, and community events
  • Requires occasional weekend and evening hours
  • Prolonged exposure to sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • May be required to lift up to 10 lbs.
  • May be required to navigate stairs

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required:

Job Specific Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree with a minimum of 3—5 years of human resources generalist experience. Will consider extensive experience totaling 7 years or more in lieu of degree.
  • Exemplary computer and communication skills including proficiency in the use of Microsoft software (MS Word, Excel, etc.).
  • Solves problems by identifying causes, gathering and processing relevant information, generating possible solutions, making recommendations, and resolving problems
  • Excellent time management skills with proven ability to meet deadlines.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to act with integrity, professionalism, and confidentiality.
  • Proficiency with or the ability to quickly learn the organization’s HRIS and talent management systems.

Preferred Requirements:

  • SHRM or HRCI Certified.

Other

  • Provides administrative support for special and ongoing projects as needed by the Director of Human Resources.
  • Assist in improving the quality of all administrative processes.
