HS/MS Library Media Assistant Paraprofessional

Position Title: Library Media Assistant

Reports To: Principal and Director of Technology

Supervises: None

Classification: Support Staff | Paraprofessional

Terms of Employment: At-will employment | Work schedule per Letter of Assignment

Salary to be determined annually by School Board

Performance will be evaluated by the Principal and Director of Technology in accordance with Board policy

Board Policy Job Description Statement Requirements:

Position Summary:

This position proactively aligns with the District’s mission, goals, strategic initiatives, continuous improvement plan and evolving priorities, in accordance with District policies and all applicable federal, state, and local laws. Responsible for supporting the library operations and creating a welcoming and organized environment that promotes reading, research, and responsible technology use while promoting a positive, inspiring, respectful, and safe environment for all students and staff.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

  • Fosters a sense of community and a positive, collaborative environment that promotes trust and respect among staff, students, families, and the District. Maintains effective, regular, good, communication and collaboration with students and staff.
  • Maintains high standards of conduct and safety with students and staff in accordance with District Board Policies and applicable federal, state and local laws. Follows and enforces copyright rules, as necessary.
  • Assists students and staff in identifying, locating, and properly using materials, technology, and equipment housed in the library media center.
  • Supervises students in the library media center, reinforcing behavior expectations and ensuring a safe and productive learning space.
  • Utilizes Destiny library circulation system to maintain accurate staff and student accounts.
  • Files and shelves all materials.
  • Responsible for inventory management, including annual audits, ordering, receiving, repairing, and tracking supplies, equipment, and library materials.
  • Makes recommendations to the Library Media Specialist on new books, resource materials, consumable supplies, and equipment requests.
  • Serves as first step problem solving of staff and student technology problems, routing/tracking technology for service, and tracking/recovering/maintaining backup technology inventory.
  • Prepares and operates library and media equipment as needed.
  • Evaluates existing technology, databases and other materials to activity utilization data.
  • Schedules and manages the use of all materials, technology, equipment, and space available though the library media center.

Secondary Functions and Responsibilities:

  • Participates in team meetings and other such meetings as are required or appropriate.
  • Participates in inservice training programs as assigned.
  • May serve as back-up to other staff in their absence as necessary.

Qualifications, Education, Experience and Other Licensure Requirements:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Work experience in a library or office support role preferred.
  • Experience working with students preferred.
  • Basic computer skills with library catalog systems, Google, and/or educational software.
  • Courses in library science preferred.

  • Stays informed regarding policies, events, students’ needs, and other information related to job responsibilities.
  • Flexibility in schedule may be required.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

This role has frequent contact with students and members of the community. While performing the responsibilities of this position, the employee is regularly required to engage in conversation and is required to utilize communication skills, such as speaking and listening. The employee is required to sit, stand, and walk at regular and extended intervals throughout the workday. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision and ability to adjust focus. Essential functions require a high level of concentration and attention to detail.
