Massachusetts General Hospital is seeking a detail-oriented Human Milk Technician to join our Human Milk Services team. In this specialized role, you will safely prepare, fortify, label, store, and dispense expressed and donor human milk for enteral feedings in accordance with physician orders and strict hospital guidelines. This position plays a critical role in supporting the nutritional care of medically fragile infants by ensuring precision, safety, and quality in every preparation.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Prepare and fortify human milk according to individualized physician orders
  • Calculate and measure precise feeding volumes and nutrient concentrations
  • Maintain strict aseptic technique and infection control standards
  • Ensure accurate labeling, tracking, and storage to prevent errors or contamination
  • Collaborate with nurses, physicians, dietitians, and lactation consultants
  • Maintain organization and inventory of milk room supplies
  • Train team members on preparation and safety protocols

Schedule: Four 10-hour shifts per week; variable schedule including weekends to ensure team coverage.

Job Summary

Summary: Provides essential support in preparing, storing, and dispensing human milk for enteral feedings. Ensures the accurate and safe handling of expressed and donor milk, following hospital policies and regulatory guidelines. Responsible for maintaining the organization of milk room supplies and performing procedures under the supervision of the leader and nurses. Collaborates with multidisciplinary teams to meet the unique nutritional needs of patients.

Essential Functions:
  • Safely handle, prepare, and label expressed breast milk and donor milk for patients, adhering to physician orders and strict hospital guidelines.
  • Accurately measure, mix, and fortify human milk with prescribed additives (e.g., high-caloric or protein-enriched supplements) to meet the individualized nutritional requirements of each patient.
  • Utilize advanced math and critical thinking skills to calculate and prepare precise feeding volumes and nutrient concentrations.
  • Act as the safety officer for human milk by ensuring proper storage, handling, labeling, and tracking to prevent contamination, errors, and waste.
  • Follow strict aseptic techniques and infection control protocols while preparing and dispensing human milk.
  • Collaborate with physicians, nurses, lactation consultants, and dietitians to ensure customized milk preparations meet patient-specific nutritional goals.
  • Train new care team members on the science of human milk, fortification processes, and proper preparation techniques.
  • Assist in educating clinical staff and families on breast milk safety, handling, and storage guidelines to support optimal infant nutrition.


Qualifications

Education
High School Diploma or Equivalent required; Associate's degree Nutrition preferred

Bachelor's Degree Nutrition preferred

Licenses and Credentials

Experience
Experience in nutrition, pediatrics, or pharmacy 1-2 years required

Experience working in a hospital environment 1-2 years preferred

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Treats, records, personal items, and correspondence following patient privacy policies.
Strong math and computer skills.
