Human Resources Specialist (SHRM-CP Preferred)

Department: Human Resources

Reports To: Human Resources Manager

FLSA Status: Exempt

Location: Onsite – Shipyard / Office Environment


Position Summary

The Human Resources Specialist supports day-to-day HR operations with a strong focus on compliance, employee relations, and workforce administration. This role partners with leadership to ensure HR practices align with company policy, federal and state regulations, and government contract requirements.

The ideal candidate holds a SHRM-CP certification and demonstrates a strong working knowledge of employment law, compliance training, and HR systems.


Key Responsibilities

Employee Relations & Compliance

  • Provide guidance on HR policies and procedures.
  • Support investigations and documentation related to employee relations matters.
  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local employment laws.
  • Maintain compliance postings and regulatory documentation.
  • Assist with FMLA, ADA accommodations, and leave administration.

Onboarding & Workforce Administration

  • Coordinate onboarding and orientation processes.
  • Process personnel changes (status changes, compensation updates, promotions).
  • Maintain employee personnel files (electronic and physical).
  • Track and maintain I-9 compliance and E-Verify documentation.

Training & Development

  • Administer compliance training programs (OSHA, anti-harassment, etc.).
  • Track LMS completion and certifications.
  • Support performance review administration.

Payroll & Benefits Support

  • Support payroll processing coordination.
  • Assist employees with benefits enrollment and inquiries.
  • Track PTO and leave balances in coordination with payroll.

Government Contract & Audit Support

  • Maintain HR documentation for audit readiness.
  • Assist with EEO-1 reporting and workforce data tracking.
  • Support compliance related to federal contract requirements (as applicable).

Qualifications

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or related field preferred.

Certifications

  • SHRM-CP required or preferred.
  • PHR (a plus).

Experience

  • 3–5+ years of progressive HR experience.
  • Experience in manufacturing, shipbuilding, or industrial environments preferred.
  • Experience with HRIS systems.

Knowledge & Skills

  • Strong understanding of employment law and compliance.
  • Working knowledge of FLSA, FMLA, ADA, OSHA.
  • High attention to detail and documentation accuracy.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to manage confidential information with discretion.
  • Proficiency in HRIS, Microsoft Office Suite, and reporting tools.

Work Environment

  • 100% onsite within a shipyard office setting.
