The Position

The Florida Department of Corrections is seeking quality candidates to join our Human Resources team in Tallahassee, Florida. As a Personnel Background Specialist, you will be integral to the human resources team, focusing on conducting thorough background checks and ensuring compliance with employment and labor laws. This position will require attention to detail, the ability to interpret and apply policy and procedure, and complete a high volume of data entry.

This position is classified as Other Personnel Services (OPS), which does not accrue leave or participate in the Florida Retirement System. However, managers work with OPS staff to offset pre-approved missed hours with an alternate work schedule. Additionally, OPS staff are Enrolled in an alternate FICA plan which can be rolled over to an IRA upon leaving OPS status.

Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Conduct background screening and quality assurance for security applications.
  • Utilize various programs used by the Department including but not limited to Excel, Word, SharePoint, FCIC/NCIC, and CCIS.
  • Ability to provide detailed analysis of criminal records and other background systems data.
  • Ability to organize and maintain personnel-related records.
  • Research, collect, evaluate, and analyze data to present in written format.

Requirements:

  • At least two (2) years of professional experience in a fast-paced office environment.

Entry-Level Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Skills in Microsoft Office programs such as Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint.
  • Skill in using computers and computer applications.
  • Skill in using communication principles and techniques to effectively convey information, orally or in writing.
  • Skill in time management.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Ability to communicate in professional written and verbal business communication.
  • Ability to interpret and apply rules and procedures.
  • Ability to understand and apply applicable rules, regulations, policies and procedures relation to Human Resources program functions.
