Human Resources Generalist

Job Summary

The HR Generalist supports the Human Resources Manager in executing day-to-day HR operations while helping drive consistency, compliance, and employee engagement across United Liquid Waste and Recycling. This role serves as a key partner to employees and leadership by supporting recruitment, onboarding, employee relations, benefits administration, and compliance initiatives.

This position is ideal for a hands-on HR professional who thrives in a fast-paced, operational environment and enjoys balancing administrative responsibilities with employee-facing support. The HR Generalist plays a critical role in ensuring a positive employee experience while supporting organizational growth and workforce stability.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Serve as a primary point of contact for employee HR-related questions and support needs.
  • Assist in administering HR policies, procedures, and programs across ULWR.
  • Maintain accurate employee records and HR documentation in compliance with legal requirements.
  • Support employee relations efforts, including responding to employee concerns, conducting initial investigations, and escalating issues as appropriate.
  • Assist with performance management processes including documentation, tracking, and follow-ups.
  • Support full-cycle recruitment efforts including job postings, candidate screening, interview coordination, and offer preparation.
  • Partner with hiring managers to support staffing needs across operations, CDL drivers, field labor, and administrative roles.
  • Coordinate pre-employment processes including background checks, drug screenings, and onboarding paperwork.
  • Facilitate new hire onboarding and orientation to ensure a positive and compliant start.
  • Assist in benefits administration including enrollments, changes, and employee communication.
  • Support open enrollment processes and ongoing employee education regarding benefit offerings.
  • Coordinate with vendors and internal teams to ensure accurate benefits processing.
  • Assist with compensation tracking, benchmarking, and internal equity reviews as needed.
  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local employment laws including FLSA, FMLA, ADA, COBRA, HIPAA, and DOT-related requirements.
  • Support maintenance of compliance records including personnel files and DOT Driver Qualification Files.
  • Assist with audits, reporting, and documentation as required.
  • Track and report on HR metrics such as turnover, time-to-fill, retention, and onboarding effectiveness.
  • Identify trends and support recommendations for improving HR processes and employee experience.
  • Assist in developing and implementing HR initiatives focused on engagement, retention, and organizational effectiveness.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or a related field (or equivalent experience).
  • Two to five years of progressive human resources experience, including demonstrated leadership or strategic responsibilities.
  • Strong knowledge of HR principles, employment law, and best practices.
  • Proven ability to manage multiple priorities and operate both strategically and tactically.
  • Strong problem-solving and decision-making skills with the ability to handle complex employee situations.
  • High level of integrity and ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and HRIS systems.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience and knowledge of payroll and/or HRIS systems.
  • Experience working with DOT rules and regulations.
  • Experience working in a shop, manufacturing, transportation, or industrial environment.
  • Bilingual

Physical and Mental Demands

  • Ability to sit, stand, walk and use office equipment.
  • Lifting to 25lbs infrequently.
  • Employee must be able to speak with employees and vendors as needed in-person, via telephone and/or e-mail.
  • Sedentary work in an office setting, involving prolonged periods of sitting.
  • Employee will also be exposed to moving equipment, such as semi-trailers, tractors, and recycling equipment.
  • Exposure to weather implements, road hazards and traffic when commuting between facilities.

Salary Range

The expected salary range for this role is $65,000 to $75,000 per year. Actual compensation will be determined based on relevant experience, skills, and qualifications.

Pay: $65,000.00 - $75,000.00 per year
