Human Resources Manager

Position Title: Human Resources Manager
Location: Associated Humane Societies – Statewide (Travel Required)
Reports To: Chief Operating Officer
Status: Full-Time, Exempt

About Us

Founded in 1906, Associated Humane Societies (AHS) is the largest animal sheltering system in New Jersey, operating four shelters in Newark, Forked River, Tinton Falls, and Vineland. Our mission is to provide compassionate care, advocacy, and shelter for animals in need while working to create stronger, more humane communities.

We are seeking a Human Resources Manager to join our leadership team and support our growing workforce across all locations. This role is essential to cultivating a positive organizational culture, ensuring fair and consistent personnel management, and supporting staff so they can focus on the lifesaving work we do.

Position Overview

The Human Resources Manager is responsible for leading the human resources function for AHS, including recruitment, onboarding, personnel management, conflict resolution, employee engagement, and workplace culture. This role will serve as a trusted partner to leadership and staff, ensuring compliance with employment laws while fostering an environment of collaboration, accountability, and compassion. This person will be required to travel to each of our locations and provide onsite support. An example of a schedule would be Newark once a week, Vineland once a week, and Tinton Falls/Lacey once a week.

Key Responsibilities

  • Recruitment & Hiring
  • Lead full-cycle recruiting across all AHS locations, including job postings, interviewing, and candidate selection.
  • Partner with department managers to forecast staffing needs.
  • Onboarding & Training
  • Design and implement a comprehensive onboarding program that integrates new hires into the AHS culture.
  • Ensure employees receive required training, policies, and resources.
  • Personnel Management & Employee Relations
  • Serve as the point of contact for employee concerns, grievances, and workplace conflicts.
  • Provide guidance to supervisors and staff on employee performance and disciplinary procedures.
  • Ensure fair and consistent application of policies across locations.
  • Workplace Culture & Employee Morale
  • Develop strategies to strengthen organizational culture and improve employee morale.
  • Conduct staff engagement surveys and implement initiatives that foster retention, recognition, and career growth.
  • Support wellness, inclusion, and team-building efforts.
  • Compliance & HR Administration
  • Maintain compliance with federal and state labor laws and organizational policies.
  • Oversee personnel files, documentation, and HR systems.
  • Partner with leadership on policy updates and organizational best practices.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or related field required (HR certification preferred).
  • 3–5 years of professional HR experience, preferably in a nonprofit or multi-site organization.
  • Strong knowledge of NJ employment law and HR best practices.
  • Excellent communication, conflict resolution, and interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to handle confidential information with discretion.
  • Compassion for animals and alignment with AHS’s mission.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $70,000.00 - $80,000.00 per year
