ABOUT THIS POSITION


The Aviation Department manages and operates the Phoenix Airport System which consists of Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport, Deer Valley Airport, and Goodyear Airport. The Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport has consistently been ranked as one of the top ten busiest airports in the nation. Serving more than 125,000 passengers daily, with over 1,200 flights per day, the airport has a total economic impact of more than $38 billion per year.

The Aviation Department has a vacancy for a HVAC / Mechanical Systems Technician position. This position offers experienced HVAC/Mechanical Systems Technicians the opportunity to join our team in performing skilled and semiskilled work in the installation, operation, repair, and maintenance of heating and air conditioning systems/components and other mechanical equipment, including automatic doors/gates, pumps, air compressors, and fire/life safety systems, in one or more public buildings.

Work schedule: 3rd shift, Tuesday thru Saturday, 10:00 PM - 6:30 AM.

Training will be conducted on 1st shift: Monday thru Friday, 6:00 AM - 2:30 PM for 6 months.

IDEAL CANDIDATE

  • Ability to proficiently read and interpret blueprints, performance charts, control panels, and PC terminals.
  • Ability to proficiently install and service HVAC/R equipment, read and interpret blueprints, performance charts, control panels, and PC terminals.
  • Ability to work independently and safely using standard HVAC technician tools and equipment, i.e. climbing ladders, electric and hydraulic lifts, power tools, hand tools, and refrigerant recovery equipment.
  • Mechanically inclined technician with the desire to learn mechanical systems beyond HVAC equipment such as auto-glass, auto-doors, and jet-bridges.

SALARY


Pay Range: $30.31 to $40.61 per hour.

Hiring Range: $30.31 to $36.84 per hour.

Internal Only: Please understand that this is pay grade 249. If selected, your salary offer will be based on the applicable promotion or demotion worksheet in accordance with the City Pay Ordinance.

  • Promotions occur when the last two digits of the pay grade increase.

  • Lateral transfers occur when there is no change to the last two digits of the pay grade.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Four years of experience in the operation and maintenance of large and small, modern refrigeration and heating systems.
  • Supplemented by training in modern refrigeration and air conditioning systems.
  • OR Completion of an acceptable apprenticeship program.
  • Other combinations of experience and education that meet the minimum requirements may be substituted.
  • Must possess EPA 608 HVACR Universal certification at time of application.
  • Working conditions:
    • Moving objects weighing up to 50 pounds may be required.
    • Working irregular hours, shifts, weekends, holidays, and evenings may be required.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS


The minimum qualifications listed above, plus:

  • Experience in / with:
    • 3-phase equipment.
    • Automatic gate services and repairs.
    • Sheet metal fabrication and installation.
    • Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.).
    • Air compressors and compressed air systems (pneumatics).
    • Installation and service of package and split HVAC/R equipment.
    • Maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing variable frequency drives.
    • Pipe fitting, brazing, soldiering, and welding various pipe materials.
    • Troubleshooting, repairing, replacing 3-Phase commercial/industrial equipment.
    • Servicing and repairing of air-handlers, fan-coils, and variable air volume (VAV) systems.
    • Servicing and repairing industrial pumps that include domestic, sewer, and hydronic systems.
    • Central plant equipment, maintenance of chilled water systems, cooling towers, and related components.
    • Any of the following Building Automated Systems (BAS): Andover, Johnson Controls/Metasys, Trane Summit or Allerton.
  • Formal HVAC education, training, or apprenticeship, preferred.
