Position Overview
We are seeking a skilled HVAC Sheet Metal Mechanic to fabricate, assemble and install sheet metal ductwork and related HVAC components in both shop and field settings. The role focuses on accurate sheet metal fabrication, ductwork fabrication (rectangular and spiral), installation, testing and repair while ensuring compliance with SMACNA, ASHRAE, NFPA and site safety standards. The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, safety-minded, able to read blueprints, develop patterns/layouts and work efficiently with hand and powered fabrication tools.

Key Responsibilities

  • Fabricate and assemble sheet metal components and ductwork in the shop and on-site, including rectangular and spiral duct systems.
  • Develop patterns and layouts from design drawings and field measurements; perform precise cutting, forming and fitting of metal components.
  • Operate fabrication equipment and hand tools such as metal shears, hand seamer, brake press, slip roll/roll former, punch press, nibblers, and plasma cutter/torches.
  • Perform welding and joining operations as required (MIG/TIG, spot welding, soldering/brazing, riveting/pop-rivets).
  • Install duct systems, diffusers, grilles, louvers, rooftop units (RTUs), AHUs and VAV components, including supports, hangers and transitions.
  • Apply duct insulation and acoustical lining and perform duct sealing using mastic and UL181 materials.
  • Install and test fire & smoke dampers, perform firestopping and penetration sealing to meet code requirements.
  • Conduct duct leakage and pressure testing, airflow measurement and balancing using manometer/anemometer tools and document results.
  • Read and interpret blueprints, schematics and shop drawings; use AutoCAD or Revit/BIM files to coordinate fabrication and installation when available.
  • Follow SMACNA standards, ASHRAE guidelines, NFPA/building codes and OSHA/site safety procedures consistently.
  • Perform preventive maintenance and repairs on existing HVAC ductwork and components; troubleshoot airflow, leaks and mechanical issues.
  • Perform material takeoffs, assist with estimating and maintain accurate fabrication and installation records.
  • Maintain a clean, organized and safe shop and jobsite; participate in toolbox talks, pre-task planning and safety briefings.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED; completed sheet metal apprenticeship or equivalent trade school training preferred.
  • Minimum 3-5 years hands-on experience in sheet metal fabrication with demonstrated skill in ductwork fabrication (rectangular and spiral) REQUIRED.
  • Proven experience with sheet metal tools and machines (metal shears, hand seamer, brake press, slip roll, punch press, plasma cutter) and safe operation of powered equipment.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, schematics and develop patterns and layouts.
  • Experience with duct installation, rooftop unit installation, diffusers/grilles/louvers installation, duct insulation and acoustical lining.
  • Familiarity with duct sealing (mastic, UL181), fire & smoke damper installation, firestopping/penetration sealing and duct leakage/pressure testing.
  • Competence in airflow measurement and balancing using manometer and anemometer equipment.
  • Working knowledge of SMACNA standards, ASHRAE guidelines and NFPA/building code compliance.
  • Preferred: experience with AutoCAD, Revit/BIM and shop fabrication workflows; welding skills (MIG/TIG, spot welding), soldering/brazing and rivet/pop-rivet tool use.
  • Preferred: experience working with galvanized steel, stainless steel and aluminum; familiarity with HVAC system installation (RTUs, AHUs, VAVs).
  • Valid drivers license; ability to lift heavy materials and work at heights; reliable transportation to job sites.
  • OSHA 10 (or 30) and other relevant safety certifications preferred; strong communication skills, team orientation and attention to detail.
