Job Title: HVAC Technician
Reports To: Senior Vice President of Real Estate Development
FLSA Status: Exempt
Location: All YMCA of the Chesapeake (YOC) branch locations.
Department: Facilities
This position is considered essential.


Position Summary

The HVAC Technician is responsible for the installation, maintenance, repair, and operation of
heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems throughout all YMCA of the Chesapeake
facilities (11). This role ensures that all HVAC systems operate efficiently, safely, and in
compliance with health and safety standards, while supporting the YMCA’s mission of providing
a safe, healthy, and welcoming environment for members, staff, and the community. The
objective of this position is to ensure HVACH/mechanical systems are code compliant, functionally
ready for members and that minimum/to no outside routine contract maintenance is required
except for limited exceptions. Complete 90% of HVAC repairs in-house.


Essential Functions

 Inspect, diagnose, and repair HVAC systems, including but not limited to; boilers, heat
pumps, air handling units, split systems, energy recovery units, rooftop HVAC units,
packaged units, heat exchangers, dehumidifiers, compressors, condensing units, water
heaters, pumps, motors, fans, piping, unit heaters, Variable Refrigerant Flow (VRF)
cassette units, expansion tanks, valves (check, 3 way, balancing, backflow, etc.) and other
mechanical system components.
 Perform preventative maintenance to maximize equipment life and minimize downtime.
 Monitor building management systems (BMS) and make adjustments to ensure optimal
comfort and energy efficiency.
 Respond to emergency HVAC or facility issues promptly to minimize disruption of
YMCA programs and services.
 Maintain accurate records of service, repairs, and preventative maintenance activities.
 Assist with general facility maintenance and collaborate with other maintenance staff as
needed.
 Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal codes, regulations, and safety standards.
 Communicate effectively with YMCA staff and leadership regarding facility conditions
and maintenance needs.
 Support the YMCA’s commitment to energy efficiency, sustainability, and member well-
being.
 Ability to communicate complex, complicated issues clearly and professionally, no
matter the audience.
 Coordinate, support and otherwise team with Pool Maintenance technician to support all
HVAC/pool/mechanical systems maintenance needs across the organization.
 Support Vice President of Maintenance with developing and implementing Preventative
Maintenance Plan, tasks and strategies.

 Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications
 High school diploma or GED required; technical or trade school certification preferred.
 Minimum of 2–4 years’ experience in HVAC installation, repair, and maintenance.
 Ability to work independently and as part of a diverse team in a fast-paced environment.
 EPA Universal Refrigerant Certification required.
 Knowledge of mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems.
 Provide all required hand tools for typical assignments.
 Ability to read blueprints, schematics, and technical manuals.
 Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
 Ability to lift 50+ lbs., climb ladders, and work in confined spaces.
 Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation.

Work Environment & Physical Demands
 Frequent standing, walking, bending, kneeling, and climbing.
 Exposure to heat, cold, dust, and loud equipment noise.
 Occasional after-hours/evening or weekend work may be required for emergency repairs.
